Winter time model building thread.

-
This thread is great. I haven't built anything in 30 years at least and am getting very inspired to maybe give it a go again. Like I need another hobby. MPC has just re-released the Buddy Baker 73 Charger in 1/16. Built one when I was a kid. Would make a great centerpiece down in my car room especially with some extra detailing. And if that worked out, Roland Leong's 71 Charger funny car also appeals.

Steve

Glad to have inspired you Steve! Thats what its all about, even tho we're a REAL car forum, it makes it worth its wild to do! FUN tho, and in the winter it gets even more that do it.....

As far as the models go.......makes the hobby that more interesting for even the youngest at heart!

Not a Mopar but this is my latest build! It is a 1966 Ford Fairlane GT pro-street. I had to do extensive modifications to the engine bay to fit the the massive Boss 429 engine in, I even raised the factory hood scoop just slightly to clear the air cleaner. The one pic shows the Boss 429 engine beside the stock 390ci just slightly larger... The color is Mopar color match spray Sienna Pearl and the pics really don't do the color any justice (it was hard to get the lighting right). I did this one just for a change of pace from the stock Mopar builds I've been doing lately. Even though it's not a Mopar if I had the real one sitting in the driveway I'd certainly not hesitate to drive the wheels off of it:burnout: lol

Thanks!! The roof was never touched, this was built from a new sealed kit and the only body modification was raising the hood scoop. All other modifications were to the chassis and engine bay only, the front suspension was untouched and the interior is also untouched. I tried to keep it clean and simple!!

thats gets the dare to be different award,,,my gifts should be here in a hurry with that ride,,

Thanks fstfish66!!!!! It was a crazy build for me, for a crazy model building contest....WAS a buncha fun too! And yes off the wall. you might say that just a little.............

You mentioned "my gifts should be here in a hurry with that ride,," sure would be! the thing is so fast it blew off Mrs. C's panties, and her see-thru skirt in the take off! :D It all "lays" in the passenger side of the Sleigh!

ya should've! :D was a crazy notion a friend of mine say I ought to try....... I think, it turned out pretty good, he just didn't say what part of "crazy" it be or to try. Hell, I didn't know if I could have pulled it off, but I think that part looks good and plays the part its meant to be! The panties and skirt that is!

Im working on the 1/16th scale Dukes of Hazzard Charger my MPC. I did this kit way back when it first came out and thought it went together very well. I have to say that Im dissapointed in the molding of this one. There is a lot of extra material on the parts, like the molds are getting wore out. I have to spend a lot of time cleaning them up and the parts are not fitting all that well together, (holes are off, doesnt align properly, etc...)

I went to mount the engine in the frame and the headers push so hard on the torsion bars that the bars are actually bowed outwards about 3/16 on each side, its very noticeable! The engine sits straight in the car, but the trans is off to the passenger side.. I had to separate them and in order for them to sit straight in the frame, had to shim them. Im very disappointment with this kit!

-guy your not kiddin! I too have the 1/16th model of the General Lee.... from MPC, and I had the older one a LONG time ago, went up in flames in a house fire when my home place burned to the ground, and this new one, is WOW......

The engine? OMG, the intake is WRONG for what it ought to be, the kit comes with a Rat Roaster, thats a NASCAR intake, NOT a "Pro-Street intake that it ought to have as the General Lee was meant to have, THEN, you got the timing chain cover with the front engine mounts, THATS wrong too......The transmission ought to be an automatic, a Torqueflight comes to mind here it has a standard transmission it instead. The air cleaner in the kit, WTH is that!? The kits frame, under the 426 Hemi? The roll cage? I'd much rather see inner fenders, and have something MORE to work with as well as the A frames and spindle arms......This is justfor starters.... just to name a few.....My friend, PLEASE go with a different model starting out that one is a nightmare! Ohh, forgot to mention the 426 Hemi oil pan, with the model? Thats a Top Fuel dragster oil pan, NOT meant for NASCAR or pro-street racing.........

EVEN I will have a full plate with this one! I'm out to correct ALL the things I just mentioned!

I have 2 of the 1/16th General Lees, but I got them dirt cheap. It's just based on one of the old Superbird kits (like the Buddy Baker one or whatever I think, they're all pretty much the same kit), then they just stuck a Charger body on it. I knew that going in, but I still figured it would be a fun kit to mess around with.

The 1/25th MPC release is much more accurate of a General Lee.

please tell me you'll have an extra carburetor for the kit? I'm gonna be scratchbuilding a dual plane Hemi intake for 2 4 barrel Carters, and I got one with the kit, BUT to do this, I need a second one that matches! I'm gonna be changing the intake, and making my own oil pan just for starters......I got the valley cover part of the intake done! I just need to cough up the second carb to make it all happen!

I'm not sure I'm going to care about the detail on that one. One of them I'll save to do with my son when he's old enough. He loves the General now at least. The other, I don't know yet. It's not a kit I'll get to anytime soon, but I got them for $12 each (new), so... you know, you just grab stuff like that!

let me know if it happens in the near future! I haven't started much yet on this model (I got enough going already) BUT its one of those I'm trying to locate the needed parts for when I am full blown into it.....

Yep, very odd stuff going on with the kit. Like I mention I did this kit when I was probably about 12 years old and had no issues with it at that time.. Of course I didnt care so much about the details like I do now but it was a easier kit to build back then. Oh and another thing, the tie rod piece. None of the suspension aligns properly so you cant properly put this piece on. It will either bind on the torsion bars or is to high so it wont let the engine sit all the way down fully like its suppose to. I have not been happy with this kit since I've started it. I may just stop doing it and put it away. I have other awesome kits that I want to build.

I got the engine started on mine just enough to scratch build a damn REAL-ish looking Hemi intake... dual carburetors on mine, I HATE that damned "Rat Roaster intake they used, thats a NASCAR type intake, and the oil pan is flat being a Top Fuel dragster type for rail cars.....Hate it...... I'm simply not impressed with this kit, and when I'm through, it will have the things that make somewhat correct for what it is!

To get the intake portion done I have to get me another carburetor that matches the one it has......BUT even that might be a task in itself! BUT then again, I'll give it a bitto see if anyone has an extra, if not, I may mold the damn thing even tho it be the only 1/16th part I plan to mold.....BIG stuff to say the least.....

FYI, when I was a kid I would write to the model company for the kit I was working on. Say it had a bad mold of a part, I would ask them to send me a new body and they would free of charge. You might be able to email MPC and ask them to send you another carb because yours was deformed. Just include the part numbers you want and the kit model #.

OK, I give up, someone here will know the answer to this question. Google isn't telling me much.

I just bought the MPC Hemi Under Glass model, with the '69 Barracuda on the box. But inside, it's a '66. I don't mind, I didn't have either one, and wanted to get both, but now I'm wondering, was there ever a '69 Hemi Under Glass model kit made? Not resin, I know I could make a resin one or kit bash, but I mean, just a regular kit of a '69 HUG?
