What Did A 'BO29' Look Like When You Picked It Up At The Factory.

-
True

The Drip-Edge Moldings were 'Standard' on the;
* Dart 270
* Dart GT
* Dart GTS

But, they were 'Optional' on the Base Model.

Many of the LO23 Darts went to the Hurst Facility {sans the Trunk Deck lid}

There is some real good info here....let's keep it going.

The reason why the doors are a different color in the earlyer photo of the Barracuda is because they were acid dipped and primered at that time. When the doors were installed later on the color simply did not match.

Anybody noticed the black overspray paint on the header pannal next to the hood? I heard that the engine compartment, interior and trunk area were VERY quickley paint and they a terrible job. Pait went everywhere!!

Here is a picture of a clone I have. I madeit the best I can but made sure I kept it very streetable. 530hp, Auto with manual valve body, 8 3/4 with 3:55 gears, thin glass and correct shifter. One of the fun things about my car is all the questio I get about it....When are you going to paint it?, It did not come from the factory like that, did it?...Why is it two different colors?.... what up with the 14" front wheels and the 15" rear wheels? It's a lot of fun.

Es Muy Excellente'

-------------------------------------------

As mentioned earlier about the LO23 Model.

The Hemi Darts were equipped with the same 'standard' steering wheel
off of the 'Dart 270' ~ 'Dart GT' and 'Dart GTS'.

Also, the 1968 {Base Model} Darts were 'SEDANS', not Hardtops.

No roll bar, only a helmet, & lap belts. Resulting injuries......... a separated shoulder

liteweight

Taken from the thread Original Hemi Cuda Info, CLASS RACER FORUM.

Thank You lightweight for this info...(I suppose You follow this thread as well) very, should I say surprising news about the wreck and the clone...

Referring to the wreckage of the Heads Up Cuda driven by John Macey.
First good news driver John Macey made it fairly well...

Bad news another of these original cars is gone... I think I know of five of them. Anyone know exact how many of the original cars are "gone"?? Like forever... And may be who they are??

This Barracuda showed up in Norway in the mid seventies IIRC... I think I noticed than, when doing the walk around´s :) the doors being light weight. There was a Part Number for the light weight Doors. Anyone know if this car had the light weight doors and front bumper??

Also was it like Chrysler had a number of this special parts on the shelf, and when they were out of stock, that was it...

The car was sold back to the States. Where is it to day??

Actually I see some incorrect info here. The 383 hardtop 4 speed GTS did have boxed spring hangers. I know, I have one in the garage.

Here are a couple of pictures of the check list.

Yes, but do 68 383 4spd GTS's have plates on the front frame "torque boxes" that the convertibles all have? I thought they did not. But maybe you could clarify?

Do 68 Hemi Darts and Barracuda have plates on the front frame "torque boxes" that the convertibles all have? I thought the Hemi SS cars all had these.

Front "box" or plate:

ok, yea mine does not have the front boxes. i didn't think the hemi cars do either, could be wrong though. i had mine next to a real hemi car a few years ago, i was comparing them and did not notice the LO car having the front boxes.

Where was this "GTS Line"?

Same assembly lines built /6 cars to 383 GTS's.

That's how you find 318 car with hemi car buildsheets. The two cars had the same color interior and near/next to each other on the same assembly line. So the line worker just picked handiest seats the color they needed.

If you delete the trunk GTS emblems and trunk trim, the whole trunk lid is different. Sheet metal was pre stamped for holes required for emblems and trim. So the bare trunk itself was not an "GTS" trunk, it was a 170 trunk.

GTS roofs without vinyl roofs did not get the medallion on the C pillar. (IIRC, only vinyl roof cars got medallion)

If you just deleted the "* Roof Drip Edge Molding" there would be a gap between the front and rear drip rails. You can see in the delivered Darts, there is not a gap. So they put the lower level 170 drip rail corner pieces on the bare body prior to primer.

When you look at all the items substituted, and swapped between models, swapped body types (conv frt frame plates?),and just left off....it's just a conglomeration and combination of parts.

The shell delivered to Hurst was unique and specially made for this project. It's no more one thing, than less of another.

I guy that lived a few streets and Garaged about a block away from me Had a few of the super stock cars he was a Factory rep. I used to love to go to hia shop and talk and do things with him if anyone remember the cars he had (Mr. 5 and 50) Jack worst he sitll around he was going to start building one but health kind of put an end to that

Interesting thread. I am interested in all makes of factory super stock races, especially the 69 AMC AMX conversion by Hurst. I own the www.superstockamx.com website and have been researching these cars for over 30 years and maybe some of you could help add to the research. I have a few questions:

There is a mention of the Hurst facility in Madison Heights, I have it as in Ferndale. Is this one and the same place? After the Darts and Cudas Hurst worked on the AMX and the Dodge Taxis in the same building.

There are a number of pictures floating around of the original cars. Are these from Hurst or Chrysler?

Did Chrylser send a list of VINs and owners to the NHRA to verify the cars were made and who owned them. Does anyone have the list? AMC definitely sent this list in 69. In 1970 AMC sent all the owners (53 of them) a complete update kit to make the car look like the new 70 AMX. It included grill, hood, taillight assy, dash, seats, doorpanels, etc. AND-they assigned the car a new VIN and included that as well. A new list with the updated 70 VIN was sent to the NHRA, but the NHRA said no way so the cars had to be changed back if they were to be raced in class. (Not all were) I do have the VIN list AMC sent to the NHRA with the newly assigned 1970 VINs, but really would like to find the 69 list. Anyone have any leads or info?

I'd love to talk to any Hurst employees at the time. If you know someone could you see if they would mind talking to me?

A correction. The "28 point checklist" posted on this thread with the "36" on it is actually from an AMX. These cars could be ordered either all white or red, white, and blue. The RWB in the upper corner shows this was a tri-color car. There were a few other paper forms Hurst put with the cars as well. According to many of the original owners I talked to who went to Hurst to pick up their cars these papers were on the windshield of the car. When they arrived they were told they had "Car 36" or whatever number. Then they had to look for their car. Many were not even finished-some didn't even have the engine in them. These papers with the numbers were randomly put on the cars and did not match the VIN sequence at all. The 52 cars all had sequential VINs (plus there was an earlier prototype). Shirley and HL Shahan got Hurst car #1, but it was actually VIN #35 in the sequence.

I've managed to collect and publish just about every piece of paper generated for these cars back in 69. In trying to locate all 53 cars I've verified one as definitely destroyed in a fire (But without the 69 VIN list cannot say which one) and possibly two others destroyed. Confirmed two others as real but don't have the 69 info on them yet (again, need the 69 VIN list). One has the 70 changeover VIN which is confirmed, the other I've traced the short line of ownership and confirmed it is the Beachy Bros car but there is no dash any longer, therefore no VIN tag. AMC did not have fender tags, but there is a VIN stamp behind the steering box I hope to get. Two others were known less than 20 years ago and have disappeared-I can't believe they have been parted or destroyed as both were well known cars" Uncle Sam from the Southwest and Pappys Joy from Greenes Rambler in NJ. Hopefully they will show up.

Is there a database listing all the Darts and Cudas, and how many are left?

And finally, if anyone has any photos of the AMXs I would love to have them to ad to my website.

Thanks in advance.

I think the Darts had exhaust or what you call exhaust, some what of a straight pipe round mufflers and turn downs.
Is this true? If so did the Barracuda come with the same exhaust?
