Differences between 273 Commando Silenced Air Cleaners?

-
Some 66 2 barrel 273's had the unsilenced air cleaner with the 2 barrel base plate. I had one. It was black.

Correct on that.. in my 65 parts book is... (so it was not only 66)

14-29-2
Unsilenced w/2 Barrel Carburetor, w/273 cu. in. Eng., Barracuda.... 2465 310

14-29-6 FILTER
w/2 or 4 Barrel Carburetor, w/Unsilenced Air Cleaner except 426 cu. in. Eng. .... 1946 923

(and since Chrome is not mentioned, default would be BLACK...
And the filter shows P/N 2465 310 was the same size as the 4 BBL cover)

I will accept that the chrome air cleaner came both ways. I am not trying to start a war! Just friendly banter. Next MOPAR car show however I will try to find one. Mopar Nats should show one.

My California built 66 Dart and California purchased Dart, I got from original owner in So Cal does not have tube on cleaner. And according to build sheet it has the CAP. It had never been touched. It is also a GT with radio delete option so who knows. Ma Mopar was strange in the day for sure.

according to Alpar all 273 4bbl came with chrome parts. air cleaner, pcv valve holder and Chrome breather cap. Find me a parts number for a original Chrome breather cap with a tube. And of course the special valve covers came on it as well. And the duel point Cast Dist.

Re:
Mopar Tim: "Find me a parts number for a original Chrome breather cap with a tube."

Here is your part #
CRANKCASE VENT INLET AIR CLEANER... same as (Valve cover breather cap)
V2, L2, w/4 Barrel Carb., Chrome, California Usage.... 2463 866 <--- Breather Cap w/tube

In 1965 it was just called "California Usage"... in 1966 is when it became CAP (Clean Air Package)

You can find them at Tony's for usd 69 I think and they are new!

Whats the big dealio? Here are some pics of the chrome 273 4bbl Commando air cleaner that is on my dads 1966 Barracuda Formula S....his car is equipped with the CAP air cleaner according to his build sheet, air cleaner has never been restored and still has the factory correct ribbed hose! He thought all these years the air cleaner was not correct and has some chrome ones without the breather but I think after looking at his build sheet, this one may be correct :glasses7:

I also have pics of a NOS air filter he has and a NOS breather I have here for A NON-breather air cleaner if anyone wants to see it :D

As far as I can find out the Chrome air cleaner only came with out tube. I believe the ones we see with tube is simply a slant 6 cleaner that was chromed. Im might be wrong but the pics I have seen of these restored 273s leaves a lot of questions. 67 valve covers on one so the proof of pics of these restored cars is lacking. The fuel lines are incorect on most so Im not buying the tube is a CAP on chrome air cleaners. Need more proof IMO.

See my latest post in this thread....the proof has been posted :glasses7:

Here is his build sheet...some numbers have been blanked out for privacy :happy1:

Note the "CAP" clean air package box.....

I thank You 66340SEDAN for those awesome photos!!!

Also I see those photos with the parts box numbers did match my May 1965 Mopar Parts Catalog :D

Anytime bud, I love this site cause its an awesome tool for learning and it's great when you can share info and even better when you can learn more :prayer:

Thanks guys. Not that it matters but im convinced. Have a merry christmas all. Nice picture off the car. very convincing.

Just for fun. What year was that? 65 or 66

It was off a 66 Valiant in a junk yard. That is all I remember. I do remember air filter catalogs calling out the HP filter for 1966 273 2 barrel engines. I had a 64 273 2 barrel Barracuda and it had the standard snorkel 273 / 318 air cleaner.

I would not believe all you read on Alpar. I've seen some mistakes there. 273 4bbl did come with chrome parts. The air cleaner, pcv valve holder and Chrome breather cap to go with the special valve covers. The dual point cast iron Prestolite distributor, carb, intake, pistons, valve springs, and cam were the differences in the engine.

Tim no worries, we are all passionate about our old mopar. :)

For me allpar is summary historical reference,, Many articles in story format some tech.

Have you checked out the performance manual on hamtramck? http://www.hamtramck-historical.com/_1965Hi-PoParts-01.shtml?load_img=11
This page lists the 65 dress items.

65 bought in California without cap, I wonder if there were some sort of deal made to get a non Cap car with the original buyer, to 'make the sale'...

Have a happy holiday.

I just was curious if all cars produced in LA had CAP whether they were sold in California or not. What all states were the California produced cars sold in?
TMM, for all cars produced in California the C.A.P package was mandatory. What I've heard of is that cars assembled in CA but to be sold in Oregon or Arizona got that package too. Otherwise they could not drive the cars on the rail wagons or on the trucks in L.A.!
I have heard this from two different sources but I don' have any documents to prove it.

Hmm, my 65 Barracuda did not have the C.A. P. Package... and was built in California for Dealership Sale in Arizona... And I have Driven it into California many times and Never got turned around because I did "NOT" Have C.A.P. !!!( So they could be Driven there ) Only Vehicles (back then) that were made for Sale & Sold at California Dealerships had to have that package !!!!
