dino oil and ZDDP additives ? anybody

So what's it got in it, PPM for each?

CJ-4 Rotella got reduced to about 1100 ppm of zinc, from about the 1400-1500 range of CI.
Ph went under 1K...

Apparently there aren't enough on the road to keep it from getting reduced. :) :glasses7:

Hmmmm, it's been a good number of years since I had researched that info... Now that I have RE-looked up the data again... You seem to be quite correct crackedback... I guess there aren't enough Old DIESELS on the road and (as you said) they have reduced "zinc" a bunch... I may have to switch to the OFF ROAD racing oil after all... I'm still against "additives"... but that line of thinking may also change for me. Though, I still do have a few "old" gallon jugs of the Valvoline Premium Blue left and LOTS of Mobil 1 15W-50 w/zinc.

So this thread has been enlightening and informative for sure... else I would have gone on thinking nothing had changed... I miss the old days when we had "LEADED" Fuel, lots of "ZINC" in ALL Motor oils... And more and more, the "STEEL" in cars is being replaced with plastics and now my Doc is telling me I have an "IRON" deficiency... What is with this "Metals" thing???

Guess I'll quit giving my Two Cents anymore (there goes the "COPPER" as if that is real anymore) Sigh~

Amsoil has a variety of high zinc oils to choose from. While it's not usually found on store shelves, it's possible top find a source in their dealer network. Might be able to work out a deal locally. While it's not "conventional oil", it does offer other benefits and no additives needed.

They also have free shipping on $100.00+ on retail purchases or become a preferred customer member. Just like anything else, gotta do the math to see what's the most economical way to go.

Don't do that. A good discussion is usually informative.

Lots of ways to skin the cat in this deal. ZDDP plus, mixing a little of the lucas hot rod oil, older rated oil, off road only, etc.

The doctors tell you you don't have enough iron, then want to implant all sorts of metal and fiber in you. :)

Kendall Super D3 still has 1450ppm of Zinc

I now use mobil 1 from Costco 45 for 6qts....and Lucas additive, but only use 2 oz at a time! I have a food scale that I use to measure it out. Put oil filter on the scale, clear the weight then pour in the additive directly to the filter.

I usually use Rotella, The last time i checked the zddp it was at 1400ppm if i remember correctly our old engines need 1200ppm's to be safe, looks like i'm on the hunt for new oil.

I always recommend a additive! I never trust the oil company's. That's how we got into this mess. The highest mileage engine I put together. Is a performer cam'd (flat tappet) 468 in a dualy. It see's regular horse towing duty. Going on 120,000. Every oil change is Rotella with red line additive. My two cents, from my experience. To date every motor I have built, has been because of a flat lobe. The owners didn't know they had to add any ZDDP! Again, this is just from my experience.

Actual lab analysis shows that Defy has lots of ZDDP.

Thank you for the tip also! ^^^^ I will try it! This is why I love this site. I am extremely over cautious when it comes to an engine build. But, I am also very open minded. It just has to make sense to me! Thanks for the tips fellas! Shane

Defy is actually designed for flat-tappet engines...in a store, it's usually with the high-mileage oils. (It's a bright-red bottle.) I've seen 5W-30, 10W-30, and 10W-40.

I used it (5W-30) in my Cherokee (which is flat-tappet), and Blackstone called the result one of the BEST samples they had ever seen from a 4.0 Jeep. Note that the Jeep had ~197,000 miles on it.

Thanks again! I will try it, and the hot rod oil too! Thank you jar and rusty! If it doesn't work, it's gonna get ugly! Just Kidding! Have a great new years fellas!

Just run the Lucas. It has 2100 PPM of zinc.
