Just bought daughter 1965 Barracuda having some electrical issues but need advice on adjusting automatic floor shifter . When daughter puts car in reverse the reverse lights come on and then shut off and it's really rough shift like it banging into gear . I'm guessing its between gears and missing the reverse switch . Any help is appreciated .
Thanks Bud

Clunk, bang! Might not be internal tranny at all. Could be a sloppy ball and trunion joint. (front u joint) or loose rear one. Could also be too much play in the differential. Many Mopars had that clunk into reverse. Make sure your idle speed is slow enough. Shift into reverse while on fast idle and you will hear lots of clunking and banging. Yes you may need a band and linkage adjustment in the tranny.. tmm

The reverse lamp switch is mounted on the shifter either in/under the floor console or low on the steering column. If the trans fluid is low and/or the torque converter leaks down while parked you'll get a sudden reverse engage/bang. Try this, go to neutral first and allow the front pump to fill the torque converter ( a minute at most ) then go to reverse and see if the bang is there. If it is the drive line is suspect.

Also check the rubber transmission mount on the tail shaft housing. They deteriorate rapidly if covered in oil from a previous transmission/engine leak.

Ok some good info there .I'll give it a look and let you know.
Thanks for the help
