Found member mike mahl's 71 Swinger for sale post. Looking through the photos I came across the open trunk picture. What is it (yellow arrow)? I've seen it on a few cars. Is it a '71 only item? Swinger only? I assume fuel tank related? Please enlighten me.

A year specific item I believe .. I think it's a fuel vent .. Maybe others can chime in

Fuel vent system, if you look underneath, you should see about four or five vent lines coming from the tank, they feed up that tube. Should be a plate over the lines.

Venting......my 1971 Scamp (Canadian)

Nope, they are on some of the U.S. models as well. I think California emissions for 1971 or something like that.

That's the vapor separator for the late 70-early 71 ECS system. I actually sell those things to people who are trying to restore cars that have had them removed over the years.

wayyyyy back in the 80's ( when I was brain dead), I had a few E bodies with all those hoses..... never knew there was anything else in the tank but gas? LOL seems we never stop learning???

Tony is exactly right. That stand pipe prevents liquid fuel from traveling forward to the engine compartment. 4-corner tank ventilation system.

My 71 Duster has it. Always wondered what it was but never looked into it.

someone hit it - this is CA only emissions stuff

Actually sometime "about then" it was required 50 states. This actually started in CA in '70 There were changes from year to year.
