Drag Racing is Dying

-
Who cares about driftin, slidin or whatever ? It's all ghey.

my opinion is there is room in the hobby for all ages, income levels, interests. whatever.... we humans tend to gather around people that share out interests and values. no one makes us intermingle. the dragstrips should keep things somewhat segregated perhaps??????
we (me included) have probably all done illegal or stupid things??? street racing is dangerous, driving wreckless,..(drifting ).. , kill or mam someone and YOU have to live with that fact. a grudge race on a deserted road, might be illegal, but if not dangerous to anyone.... been there done it. if drifting on a closed course is their idea of racing, go at it. the people attending that event will be those with that interest..... if they like head-banging hip-hop music, let um.....

drifting, so that's what it's called. I thought it was loss of traction, when I was headed toward both guard rails. lol did ya know you could drift with a mopar, just punch it !

well your post had a very aggressive tone coming up to asking about a grudge race. I took it as very aggressive and out of place in a discussion because i took it like your solution to settle differing opinions which would be ludicrous.

Where you are 100% correct is that it wasnt cool for me to generalize an entire generation on the acts of the bad apples. I will own up to the fact that i shouldnt have done that. Although an increasing number prove that our generation has some issues, its not always true for every last person.

Speaking of young guns.......have you guys seen this thread for young guns..

http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=299759&page=2

I have had the thoughts to do some giveaways and fun build threads for young guns down the road.

BTW: i dont "grudge" race, but if you ever in the southern Colorado area .....there is a local track that we run for fun. Although i have not run a car in some time it can still be cool out there. Back when i was in first years of college days i ran my dad's 69 cuda on the track but that has been awhile now and the cuda is showng it age now. (original 2 owner Car that my dad bought as a used car in 1972) But something will be coming out of the shop real soon.
Excellent response.....

Not at our local track.

We get 300 + tech cards a day Saturday and Sundays

One weekend last year we had 369 on Saturday night

When they do street car shoot outs on Friday nights, they have over 3000 spectators and the place is packed , mind you its FWD tuner type stuff mostly

Most weekends the place packed with campers, families cooking out, having fun and racing cars .

Our heads up series gets faster and more high dollar stuff then the big money bracket races.

The kots class is usually filled with a bunch of big turbo cars running 8s and quicker.

drifting is like mens couples figure skating

it sucks

driving sideways is for getting around the dirt track

much rather watch 850 hp 1400lb sprint cars go 4 wide into a corner at 100+ then watch a couple of ricers dance at 50 mph

racing is dying. dirt tracks are struggling to keep the gates open. kids would rather play video games and what not then pick up some tools and do something with their hands

Our local tracks are 1/8 mile! Regular program doesn't have a lot of spectators, but it does have alot of participants. Including junior dragster. I've seen alot of these guys and girls come up, and start bracket racing. They are deadly on the tree. Friday night grudge draws quite a few people. But, once a month Street car shootout. Heads up, No time on request draws a big crowd. Stands are full tents set up, grills smoking. Someone mentioned they refuse to go see a eighth mile race. I don't understand that. I love them both! Closest quarter mile track is a couple hours. Eighth mile track is twenty minutes. Our track is also home to the Door slammer nationals. Can't be that bad.

How did this thing turn into who likes what of car enthusiasts? Why can't people have any respect for something their not into? Close minded much? Never tried drifting myself but the talent it takes is crazy, I'd like to see any of you old farts in here give it a go lol.

Anyway, all motorsports are suffering due to a down turn in most people's incomes. I haven't noticed any dying off at my local drag strip though, place is always packed on a Friday night, grudge races are huge around here!

Does show one positive about this thread : People are still passionate about motor sports,& hot rods in general.

Go on YouTube and type in Ken Block Gymkhana seven. I would post the link but I can't figure it out how to do it on my Ipad. Even though he is driving a Ford, it is still badass and it takes quite a little bit of skill to do what he does.

Yeah I've seen most of his videos, they are insane, that's exactly my point! That guy has more driving skill in his pinky then most these old timers in here hating on something that takes some skill. I just never understand why people have to hate on things their not into. I don't like sports but I don't go around kicking every guy with a football shirt on in the nuts, know what I'm saying?

instead of looking up ken block look up sebastian loeb.

way more talent and actually wins races.

ken is talented but basing your opinions on him over gymkhana is a joke. he kills it at the 100ac woods rally in missouri and owns the concord pond stage up north

don`t know about the rest of the old timers but, we used to do that when I was 15 for excitement. of course it wasn`t organized or contained to a track, doesn`t interest me in the slightest now------old farty!

Drag racing was killed by electronics, NOS, and a plethora of rules to control high tech cheating and to make everything equal.

I quit racing...and watching...when pure heads-up racing of street driven cars ended...and participation prices skyrocketed. The same holds true for oval track racing.

I agree. Technology is a great thing but its really changed motor sports. If you want to participate better bring the big wallet out. Also a lot of driver skill has been lost to electronics. I used to run a 1969 dart swinger 340 in pure stock back in the day. Loads of fun, zero gadgets.

a lot of good points on here. my problem w/ drag racing is:electronics are killing it, me and a bunch of people I know aren`t interested in watching a car or dragster leave the line-shut off-come back to life and run down a real car. delay boxes and all included, next big deal will prob. be setting in the stands w/ a joy stick. and just as big w/ me is 1/8 mile racing, I hate it and will not pay to see it. i have a friend that`s got a low 9 sec. vega, knocking on the 8`s, he even switched back to foot braking says he`s having more fun. and the nhra is to blame too, for making it too expensive for the average guy anymore, lets face it, when you have a set of lap belts that haven`t seen sunshine but 2-3 times, and you have to replace them every two yrs., come on! also grew up on small town drifting as such, did it on dirt roads, and the streets when the cops were at the other end of town, doesn`t hold any thing for me anymore. I still enjoy 1/4 racing. the problem is w/ me you can`t gear a street car for 1/8 mile b.s.----rant over -bob:protest::protest::protest:

Have you ever "driven" the finish line in a 1/8 mile race? I've ran both. Don't understand the 1/8 mile bashing on here.Personally I don't pay to see any drag racing....I DO IT!

Yes. That is about the only instance drifting is cool. On a dirt track, or right before Danica collects Jeff Gordon and drifts them both into the wall.

And why can't people like what they want to like and not like what they want? Why do we always have to have the psycho babble bullcrap "respect others" thrown in? If I don't like something, I don't like it. Respect be damned.

Sorry, but not everything is always fluffy bunnies and unicorns fartin rainbows. Your rights end where mine begin and I have the right to piss all over driftin if I want to.

I could care less if you want be an opinionated a-hole, I just wasnt raised in a manner to go around cutting down everyone and everything just because it wasn't my cup of tea.

Good for you. I'm proud. Now we all know the answer to the question that was on everyone's minds. We know how YOU were raised. Next.

my head hurts from reading all this crap. drag racing is an an acceleration contest between to vehicles, period. nothing else was asked by the op. yes the ricer cars seem a bit odd but they are still doing the same thing, along with motorcycles and junior dragsters. is the sport dying? yes, some parts of it are but other parts are going great guns. some one mentioned the expiration dates on safety equipment, well i'll add needing to renew your competition license every few years and have your hotrod recertified too. some where in the 80's things started to go way up in price to compete and have continued since. back to the original question "is drag racing dying?"

Finally...:burnout::burnout:I don't see bracket racing dying much.Go to Bandimere in Morrison,Colorado any weekend in the summer and you will see a lot of partisipation but most of the spectators are crew and friends of the racers. On the other hand I think Professional Drag Racing is in a little trouble. It has priced it self out of the market for the most part. When John Force has to scramble for sponsorship and cut budgets in order to race things are a little shakey. I don't agree with those that say the cars need to look like they did in the 70's and 80's but do think something needs to be done about $ 60,000 bodies and $ 50,0000 blowers so more can afford to be competitive. Right now if it weren't for Force and Shumacher the fuel classes would be fielding 8 car fields at best.I don't pretend to have all the answers but it makes me sad to see a sport I care about in this shape.:sad9:
