Testing a new part out for my convertible early A

I don't know how fiberglass mold release spray would work for you, but I used it when making fish tanks, and it's not that expensive. I bought it in quart cans and sprayed it on with a PreVal sprayer kit.

Fiberglass mold release was what I ended up using after I moved away from using the silicone mold release agent (expensive that one is) but the tried and true way worked even better than the fiberglass release agent. it just take 5-10 times longer. I'm probably going to go to a modified setup that let's me apply one coat of carnuba wax, let it dry and then spray (harbor freight gun just for mold release.)the heck out of it with FG release. it'll save time I hope.

thers gotta be an easier way....like a dip in baby powder or something.....something so simple no one has figured it out.....cold water, dr. pepper, urine....lol.

Feel free to join in.:wav:

I've been busy for a bit and was unable to get back onto the mold making side of things. so far it looks like the rear side panels are good to test out again. 2 of the test pulls came out great (well for .060 plastic anyway.) now all I have to do is wait for my .090 black styrene to some in and I'll have some ready to GO! 1 more part done that both my darts need.

also an update on the slim line 5.25 kick panels is that I am remaking a set to house a much deeper speaker (up to 3" deep like alpine SC 50 series) and testing a 6" speaker setup out. they look HUGE compared to the 5.25's, so I just don't know if they are workable.

ARGH!!! FORGOT to load the pictures.. here's the drivers side. I's huge! takes a 3 inch deep speaker and there is enough room in the slope to add the component speaker in if you want to.
it's in the final " add a little bondo to smooth things out phase"
once that's done, then it's a test piece to see if it actually fits!

Wow.. if you ever decide to make rear side panels for a '67 Convertible Dart in Copper, let me know.

:prayer:

Sweet work ! I like to see it when you get done and do a video with sound might have to do something myself as I have a 64 that could use a sound upgrade

Thanks all you guys.
I'm working on the passengers side of the deep ones now.
I have the 2inch deep ones done and made a couple of sets for members on here.

I'll see if I can make a 2 inch deep set and a 3 inch deep set so I can video them installed and kicking (um with a crappy stock radio though) I have not bought a new radio for my convertible yet since I don't know where I'm going to mount it yet.

the side panels setup for a 67 ?? is it like the 66's? it's like mister Ford said. "you can have in in any color you want as long as it's black " or black and white in this case.
as for copper color it will have to be painted since it's hard (impossible) to buy one off pieces of colored styrene. I'd have to buy about 10k worth of plastic before they'd even think of doing it.

I'd have to have a good set to take molds off of and sometimes that destroys the good set if it's really brittle.
I want to make a 1/4"ABS full side panel cover for my 66 with 4"x 6" speakers running right at the floor pointing inward , but that is much later on in the future. maybe next winter.

I don't believe they are the same as '66. After talking to a friend that dies interiors, I may pick up a set from Laysons (opinions?) and have them painted (dyed?).

if your going laysons to get the part then contact Rick@laysons a member on here to make sure you get what you want. I've heard horror stories of others just going to the site to get stuff, my parts order (1 so far) have worked out good for me though.

now that I have been home and relaxed for a couple of weeks or so, I started working on a couple things that needed to get done.
1. those plastic side trim panels for the rear side panels are now going to get .090 plastic. .060 just stretched too thin. if .090 doesn't help then I'll jump to .125 but the shape is dead on and fit is GOOD!
2. divider cushions for the front window for the convertible molds are made and a couple of test pieces are made. fit ain't too bad but the hardness is suspect. really soft for a shore 60a.

I am going to get some harder urethane about to shore 89 or more just to make sure it works good.

and then I got the rear bumper cushions made for my darts
these I like! still a little ragged around the edges but a sharp x-acto blade can cure that.

Awesome stuff!
Love the piece for the convertible vent window.

Thanks
It's been a while since I did anything on the dart. I'm still in the process of making the deeper molds for the speaker kickpanels.
I have got the rear side panel plastic trim piece done in thicker plastic.
whew lot's of work but the stuff is starting to look good and I may get the car finished this year

Lookin' MIGHTY good! I'll want some of those, even though my 64ragtop parts are OK for now. Probably will need replacements before its 100th anniversary, though!!:D

Thanks.
I just have not been in the working mood since I got back from Michigan.
it's been tough getting back into the work with me bringing home the rest of the Michigan house and garage stuff since it's piled in the middle oh the already cluttered garage. I do need to work on getting a harder rubber for the wing vent pieces, they work ok for me but really need to be harder rubber for a perfect piece.

I have to make a better mold of a fixed piece or both of the parts. 1 of mine has a chip on the leading edge and the other has a split. so it show on the new molded parts. "time for superglue to fix some of the oops's" but it does fit and I'm learning more each time I mold something up.
now to figure out where I can put all the stuff that's in the middle of the garage so I can even walk through it to get to things:banghead:

Now, can you mold me a set of exhaust manifolds :)

hell, I wish I WAS smart enough to do that. first Item I do is the early A's V8 big port manifolds for 318/360 heads that worked well on power steering cars. But I'm not knowledgeable in that field at all. I have a hard enough time keeping the little bit that I do know straight:D

Man it's been a while since I was able to get back to the kick panels. But I'm back on em for a bit. Here is the deeper drivers side kick panel mold taking basic shape in foam .. I just got my new 3d software and am playing with that to give me a better finished looking part
I just wasn't as happy with the slimline version speaker choices so I decided to make it a bit deeper. total depth should be (after top coating the mold) should be 2.9 inches to the top flange and accept 5.25" speakers plus 2" mini remote speakers. that should broaden out my speaker choice for the kick panels.

the above picture just didn't look right after I molded it up with body filler. soooo off to the drawing boards again and here is what I came up with. It's in foam right now, but this weekend it'll be in body filler and ready to test (hopefully).

A small update on the parts process
I got too darned cold to finish the cutting of the mold, but I will be back on it as soon as
I can at least get the garage back up to 60 degrees. 44 degrees is too cold for me now.
I did get the first rough cut done and it looks pretty good even though I didn't get a full .4 inches of filler on all the areas that I needed it to.

rough cut done and small patches added to raise the height so it'll cut.

Right about this time I saw my breath steaming in the garage and decided to call it quits for the night. ahh well there is always tomorrow
View attachment 20160110_125010.jpg

"IF" it's not as cold to me as tonight was:glasses7: yeah I'm a "cold weather wimp" now.

got most of the rough work done today. I will have to fill a few voids that happened and some light sanding to smooth out the transitions, but all in all it's starting to look oretty good as a test.
so it was first an idea, then a model and now it's going into foam.
the start

the shape

rough cut

final rough cut . finish cut will have to wait for a bit. (or I just might sand it to where I want.:D)
View attachment 20160119_152039.jpg

then I will mount it on a plate and raise it to the height that I need for the vacuform to work and test it in ABS.
