I have a 68 valiant with a slant 6 motor and need a power steering pump for it. Anyone know where I can get one? I see some places want me to send in mine to have it rebuilt. But Im still driving the car.
If I do have to break down and send mine in, how much would it hurt to run without it for a while?

Are you sure it's a 68? The grills you have are 67. They will be the same though.

This car is a 68 with 67 grille. I have both types, but like the center piece on the 67 since it has the plymouth emblem in it. 68 didn't have it.

I think I have one sitting around I can look when I get home on Thursday if u want to to pay the shipping I'll send it to you. But I will have to look first to make sure

Hi,

Chrysler used two types of power steering pumps. One is the Federal 1.06 pump which has a round filler neck on the reservoir and the second is a Saginaw .94 which has an oval filler neck. So, the first question is which one do you have on your car? The Federal pumps are not as easy to come by these days. Maybe someone here will have a spare core unit you could send in for rebuilding while you continue to drive your car if you need the Federal pump. The Saginaw pumps are very easy to find.

I would not recommend driving the car with out the power steering as the steering becomes very difficult to muscle around.

Here is the picture sedanman. Is your pump like this one? if so it's a federal like mine.

I have the Federal-type pump and just took it into Auto Zone. They send it to ATSCO. They told me it would be back in 10 days. It has been 6 days so far. The car will be drivable without the pump, but it will be difficult. You will not be doing any parallel parking. Without the pump, I would be concerned about doing some damage to the gear box -- it wants power steering fluid at 1000 psi.

When you get the rebuilt pump, be sure to follow the manufacturer's flushing procedures. Improper (or lack of) flushing is the leading cause of immediate failure.

There were actually 3 p.s. pumps - TRW, Federal, and Saginaw, with mostly that chronology. The photo in post 6 looks like a Federal. The TRW pump looks very similar but has an inverted flare HP port and a larger return hose (5/8"D?). The real distinguisher is the number of bolts on the back of the reservoir (TRW has 2 in a longer slot). The mounting brackets are different for all 3, but available after-market (Bouichillon Performance is one I recall). The later Saginaw pump is supposed to be more efficient and is more available (GM cars). But, all pumps may not fit with all years and accessories.
