"POWER NATION" slant six build

-
I watched the show finally, I thought it was a great build for the intentions of the car. Not all performance is rated by 1/4 mile time slips or numbers on a dyno. I would rather drive that car with the air conditioning blasting, on a 500 mile trip than some mickey moused ''performance'' car.

kevindahle, I will tend to agree with you.The wife and I drove our 67 Dart(stone stock) coast to coast twice and had a blast. My buddy and his 89 year old father drove my 63 Valiant 170 ci from Vegas to Pittsburgh, and other than the am radio quiting,They too said what fun they had.At every gas stop they had a hard time getting back on the road as many wanted to start up a conversation. I will take a slant any time, any horsepower, any day..

who ya love more?? me or the cars??? LOL

that saying must be on page one?? LOL

maybe its an age thing, but I get this big grin on my face when I drive my lowly stock slants!!! LOL yea I still like to feel the power of a honking V8, till I see the gas gauge take this big plunge!! LOL

maybe Jay Leno should start a "car" show??????? real cars, real info, some humor, and a REAL car guy!????

Lol Jay Leno. What a hoot! He was on Overhaulin, had his friends Lotus done....Gotta love car guys that know comedy.

o well. guess I need more time at the tube and more channels!? LOL seems like I was always reading how Leno shows up at the Spring Fling and is just one of the ( car) guys/ oh well.....

I've only had my 64 Val vert a few months but the next guy who says "You puttin' a V-8 in that thing?" I'm gonna have to dope slap him. I already have a couple V-8 A-bodies and a 69 340 engine on a stand. I WANTED a Valiant and I WANTED a /6. Get your own friggin' car and do what YOU want and stop watching so many car shows on cable.

The Val was not running and I just picked up my bored 225 block over the weekend.

I haven't read all the replies/posts....but most of you guys have it nailed.....they are only flogging sponsors parts.....not many parts available, not many are going into the build.
Rather unfortunate really......how many millions of Slants got made ???

...
Amen. Try not to get "Overhauled". Foose puts a big block crate motor and big wheels w/ rubber band tires on everything he touches. The owners fawn over the cloned creation. Rather than gush, I would *****-slap him if he molested my cars. No worries, since I expect the owners are in on it and footing much of the cost. I have 3 1960's Mopars, a BB, SB, and slant. Each will keep the engine it came with. The slant was my latest acquisition but reminds me of the 69 Dart w/ 225 I drove for 20 yrs until it was stolen.

Where is the "LIKE" button???

Product placement...Yup and the same with most of the car mags..We see the occasional "real" nuts and bolts how too. But not often enough. Im guessing those shows and mags are very beholden to thier sponsor money.

Kudos to you!

But, if you don't put a hairdryer on that thing, you'll be missin' out on a lot of fun... (outrunning V8 a bodies, heads-up...)

Just sayin'.

if someone could develop turbo for the slant that is as compact as possible, very factory appearing, affordable, and provides performance with engine durability.... yes affordable. I could see many being sold and even a few guys pulling out that SB and putting the slant back in!???

Bill,Still waiting to see that there Valiant hit the track. That thing looks SOOOOOOOO good !

Bill that is a sweet piece of work

Man, coming from YOU, that is a real compliment!!!

I have admired your Lancer for a long time, now, and the amazing craftsmanship exhibited there;
all I can say is.... AWESOME!

Keep on keepin' on....

I can't wait for the finished product!!:blob:

Well, it might well be faster; Ryan's and Tom's engines both make over 500 hp...

That will put an early A body deep in the tens...:burnout:

I am getting closer to having it in a test 'n' tune session... the weather is looking better, and the car is virtually ready.... only a couple of small details to attend to before I hook up the trailer and head the 60 miles North to Centerville.

It's been a long and arduous journey, but if I get some time slips I like, it will all have been worth it... and, one way or another, you'll hear about from me on here.

Thanks for the nice comments!

Bill Dedman,
I just noticed you are running one of those Aussie intakes. Did you try your setup with any other intakes? If so, what were the differences? Just curious. Also, did you settle on the Demon 650BT carb?
That is an awesome looking setup!

Andy,
When I bought that Aussie intake manifold (2005), the long runner version was the only one available. They have since come out with a much-shorter runner version. I sent pictures of all my parts to a guy I know who makes his living as a forced induction consultant to auto manufacturers; he's not just a hobbyist like I am; he actually KNOWS how this stuff works, BIG TIME, and he commented that this long runner manifold was the worst possible configuration for what am trying to do; he said I'd add ten pounds of boost and would not go ANY faster, as long as I had that manifold on there.

He said it was an excellent design for a naturally-aspirated system, but was the worst possible for my application.

That was HIS opinion, and when he talks, I listen, because he makes a lot of money from car makers, by issuing such edicts... a lot!

But, I paid $400.00 for that thing, and can't really afford to replace it with their short runner version, so I tried fitting an Offenhauser and a Clifford 4bbl manifold, both unsuccessfully, because they both interfered with my header in a very disappointing way, so I will just run it like it is and save my pennies for the short runner version, down the road...

In the meantime, I have not had a chance to take this car to the strip, but have done some test runs on private roads with ten pounds of boost and the tests on dry asphalt were indicative of maybe 250 horsepower.. it spun the 9"-wide Hoosier 26" tall slicks all the way through first gear, and spun them hard. That's with CalTracs, a 3.55 limited slip, 8.75" rear, the battery in the trunk, a lightweight fiberglass hood and NO front bumper...

On a different tack, Ryan Peterson's 500HP+ motor,of which I tried hard to build a close copy, uses a HyperPak intake, which is a long runner manifold, with a 650 Holley, and it goes 127mph in the quarter, (mid tens,) in a 2,800-pound (without driver) '66 Valiant two-door hardtop, with a 727 transmission...

So, who knows???

My carb is an off-the-shelf Holley, 650 double-pumper with Hangar 18 mods.

I will have the chance to run it on a set of 1/8-mile/1,000-foot clocks very soon, I think. The weather is warming up, and I have a trailer, now, so there's no reason why I can't FINALLY, get some time slips on this thing. I (with my ex-partner, Freddie Nielsen, who actually did most of the work on the car,) have FIVE YEARS invested in this project, so, I am understandably anxious to see what we have wrought! LOL!

Pray for me... :prayer::prayer::prayer:

And, thanks a lot for the kind words!!!

not yet. found a nice pair of drag radials. picking them up next week. then i just gotta wait for the track to open. the tune im running is good but its rich. gonna shoot for 25psi soon without changing anything else see if it leans it out a little. noticeable difference in power between a lean tune and a rich one. lot more power with the lean.
