**73 Scamp Mini Pro-Street Engine Swap**

-
I took the car out for a trial spin yesterday. The exhaust is tame until you lay into it a bit. It sounds almost like open headers but behind me. Car is very quite inside. Without a doubt it rides WAY better than leaf springs. No hard hitting at all. Car drives straight as an arrow and it is not aligned yet. Brakes work very good too. I only took it out to Heat up everything, rear end gears, exhaust etc and then let it cool back down and check for any leaks.

I was at a light coming out of old town Murrieta. A guy stopped at my door coming the other way in traffic and said Damn.... Nice car, does it have a Dana or an 8 3/4.... I told him Ford 9", he say O Hmmmm. My light turns green and I smack the throttle. The car did not spin at all, front end topped out immediately and it felt like it pulled the tires! I let off and short shifted into 2nd.

So anyway I get it home pull in the driveway to check the trans fluid. Pop the hood and then look under the car...... Damn I got a brake fluid leak in the rear..... Check the trans fluid all is good. Pull it into the garage and jack up the rear end...... the exhaust touched the drop line on the rear block and loosened it up........ I am thinking Damn I screwed that up and gotta make new rear lines and move the block. The rear tailpipes were an after thought and this stuff happens... Oh well.... Get over it an fix it is my thought, but how?? I left the rear end up in the air and the car that way over night. Took my wife to the movies and thought about the problem a bit. I ended up just making an aluminum bracket that the vent bolt holds down with a hole drilled in the other side that the block can bolt to, I bent the rear lines and moved the block back. Bolted it all back together and all is clear. Was a pretty easy fix and it looks like it is supposed to be that way.

All is good.

The new Slicks get here tomorrow. Alignment appointment is at 3pm on Saturday. I'm going to give it a bath hopefully tomorrow or early Saturday. Between now and then I will get the new slicks mounted as well.

I will be loading it on the trailer and hauling it down there for the alignment. I put bearing buddy's on the trailer and pumped them full of grease & put its battery on the charger.

Couple more small items left after the alignment

Well I got the itch to get back into the game sooner than my TT Build would be done so I ended up buying this Super Clean 73 Scamp off FABO. It currently has a Stockish 340, a worked over 904 trans and a 3000-3500 stall converter in it. It has 315/50/15's with a Spool and 391 gears in a back braced 8 3/4. It is a column shift which is good for the sleeper look. I may change out to a floor shift but not at this time. I like this car because just about all the cosmetic things are already done. It is Mini Tubbed and the frame is Tied too. The battery is already in the trunk.

The plan is to swap out the Stockish 340 with a different Engine in a shortest amount of time as possible, shooting for a 1 weekend transplant.

Awesome job with that 340 swap dude! :toothy10:

But seriously...awesome work, car is a totally different animal and kick-*** compared to when you got it.

Now it's time to :burnout:

Lol..... Yeah how can I forget. I still have scars to the bone! haaaa

It truly has been a long road for me. Seems it has morphed into a full time job.

While it is running and I am having fun with it. I will be buying parts to up the compression from 9:1 to 13:1 or so. The heads will get ported by Brian at IMM or possibly new ones and a NEW Big Dogggg Solid Roller will be installed with E85 on the menu. At the same time I will be working on the Peak dash that I have on my bench, buying gauges and getting it all wired up & Ready to drop in.

Sounds awesome! That'll piss off the neighbors...

Lol...... Funny you say that. I fired it up last night and it never left my driveway. My good friend texted me this morning and said he could hear it. He lives at least 2 miles away. I was making sure the TB and 2 step were on Point!

Car is washed & Dried. Didn't have time to finish it off, I will do that tomorrow. At least all the dust, dirt and metal shavings are gone! Lol

Got the slicks mounted. These ones measure dead nuts on the money. I mounted both of them in about 10 Minutes.

Alignment appointment is on tomorrow at 3pm!

My good friend came over today with his 2014 GT Mustang with Track Key, Cut outs etc. He was acting like His car would take mine out. I didn't say a word, kept my mouth shut wiping off the car. He IS my next Victim! Lol ............ He will be taking his car to the track when I end up taking mine.

Those beadlocks are sweet!

I still can't wait to see this thing in motion.

Do a wheelie!

:burnout::burnout::burnout:

Sounds great!

What's a mustang run mid 11's at best?

When are you hitting the Res? I'd do some 60 and 330 hits, then take off easy and run it out for MPH. No real simple way to get an et, then stomp him like a road apple. LOL I used to hit the track with an empty juice bottle and run the car. ET was weak and everyone thought it was on juice with the "show" that went on. Easy pickens after that. :)

Champion has a lot of different options for wheel & bead lock combinations. Almost too many!
I like the old school look myself.

Car will be in motion tomorrow after the algnment.

Feb 7th......

Play dumb, agree that I'm a dumb *** etc, my car is a POS etc... Bait and switch! I use to do that all the time in the sand. I let a guy i knew out there talk mega, mega **** on me and my car. I got him on a dead straight road right after dark... Very long on sand hwy flat as could be. Steve my buddy with the GT mustang was my passenger. Guy talking **** was by himself. So I pull up next to him rolling in 1st and taunt him.... He's like what you want some of this, I say NOPE. I want it all! So we slow down a bit he hits it first it's on. My shift point was 8300 Cadillac North Star 288ci quad cam, he has a stroked LS corvette motor. I pulled past him in first leaving my foot smashed banging all gears.. We raced at least 8 times on that road, every way possible and I smoked him every time WITH my extra 250lb passenger.... We get back to camp and holy **** he is ALL pissed off making all kinds of excuses to all his followers. He would not shut up, I just started laughing historically at him, he says WTF is so funny? I say go look at your face in the mirror.... You got your *** smoked, there was blood dripping down all over his face from the sand blasting I gave him over and over. That has got to be some of the funniest **** ever in my life!!! Haaaaaaaa I use to beat him all the time before that but he says I always had an advantage of some sort.......after the 8 lashings he never fck'd with me again.

Took the car down to get aligned got it on the rack he sets it all up and started having problems with his machine....... I got skunked. No alignment. So I will be taking the car somewhere else most likely on Monday or Tuesday.

On another note my Moper Performance sticker'd MSD 6AL took a **** today. The tach started going all crazy when the car was idling, The secondary fuel pump was coming on and the shift light was tripping. So I pull the fuse for the second fuel pump. and disconnect the tach wire at the MSD Box. All seemed good then the car started missing and idling high. Wide Band started acting weird then the engine just quit. I borrowed Pete's MSD Ignition tester and sure as **** it is DEAD. First one for me. Pete was telling me MSD will fix whatever is wrong for around $30.00, I am buying one off Pete that is still in the box for $100.00 and I will send this one out to get fixed for a spare. Always something.

Car sounds bad to the bone Louis! Sounds like you made a fool of that guy you raced too!. Great stuff. BTW just throwing this out there, Pat over at TechWest Racing does great stuff with these MSD boxes. He can make it more powerful than MSD will and he'll use higher quality components. Just food for thought.

Can he make one from his parts on hand, or does he need a core?

New box installed car fired right up. All issues fixed, Tach is WAY more stable than it was with the old box. I think that box was on its way out for awhile. I shoved a 7K Revv chip in it. You can hear it break up when I hit it.

Here is a Video of the test before I Hard wired it in the car.

Use a weather-pack connector on your MSD boxes.

I use them and it makes swapping out simple. Can have one swapped out wiring wise in 30 seconds.

I read through this entire thread a while back, but I had forgotten what you started with. Last night I went back to refresh my memory and I saw in one of your engine pics. You have a 90 deg (or something close to it) thermostat housing. Is that a chevy housing? I'm converting to efi and with a forward facing tb elbow, it wants to occupy the same spot as the upper rad hose. A 90 degree housing would be perfect and the Mopar specific ones are high as giraffe nuts, while the chevy specific ones are cheap (just like most chevy stuff). I read somewhere they have the same bolt pattern but they don't have recess in them to accept the thermostat since chevys are recessed on the manifold. If it is a chevy piece are you running a thermostat?

Thanks!

I don't know what Louis used but I did use a Billet Specialties neck that swivels (made for Chevy). Can't run a thermostat or flow restricting washers due to this without mods though. Bolts up perfect otherwise.

I don't remember where I got that thermostat housing. On that M1 Intake pretty sure it is Magnum based. Uses the smaller thermostat. It is O ringed as well so no gasket.
