I have a small air leak located about 3 inches up from the bottom of my tank on one end. It is a horizontal model. Is there any fix for it? Or should I just replace it? Thanks Jeff

Shut it off and let it drain. It can blow up at any time.

You need a new one. Rust has ate a hole in the bottom I would guess.

Check this out Jeff, about the 1:30 mark. And look at the pics toward the end.

Junk it,
At the last place I worked at a air tank came apart on a service truck.
Took the top of the cab off, totaled the truck.

Yes sir. As said. It's scrap metal. Imagine a small rust spot on a floor pan of a car. By the time you get done blasting it, the damage is five times what you thought. Same scenario with your tank. It's done. I have one that's not leaking yet, but it is OLD. It's in the back of my mind all the time.

I'm convinced scrap it is. I was looking at new ones today so I will go back and get one tomorrow.

And I tell you what. If I ever get a new compressor, first thing I am gonna do to it is tear it slam apart, take the tank to my local radiator shop and get them to coat the inside. Then it will virtually last forever.

Motor and pump etc might be worth saving.

Not cheap to buy new.

I plan on keeping the motor, pump and the plate it all sits on. It is one of those large Ingersoll units. Maybe one day I'll find a nice tank to mount it on.

Compressors and there storage vessels are placed in separate out buildings , under sheds, etc.., for 2 reasons. The lesser one is the noise.
Being a brand name , you might get a new tank for it. Order through Grainger maybe ?

I had a friend give me an old swan 60 gal 220v direct drive compressor with a bad tank. Scored a Husky 60 gal tank on craigslist, 2 years old and compressor blew a rod, for $100. Cut the mounting plate off the Swan and it slid perfectly over the Husky mount. A little plumbing and got a great high volume compressor.

how's a compressor explode when the tank has a hole in it?

I think the real point is to not even try to fix the tank. Years ago my brother tried to weld a small leak along the welded end cap on his old 2 stage compressor tank. Lasted maybe two or three months. The end cap blew off one night while no one was around. Smashed the case of a Lincoln buzz box and stuck in the garage wall.

Also, please cut a hole in the tank after you scrap it so that if someone else sees it in a dumpster they dont take it home.

compair the cost of a new tank to what you think your life or some one eles's life is worth. i know a guy that all most lost his leg from using the wrong tank.

It sure looks like the ends failed neatly along the welds. Makes one wonder about the welds.
