Has anyone used a boat motor before? I picked up a 73 date coded 340 couple years ago. Standard bore and could see crosshatch in cylinder wall with no ridge. Also believe it has a steel crank. The heads, oil pan, intake, and timing cover were all boat specific. So I can't use them.

Make sure that it's not a reverse spin.

If it was on a boat with two engines, one turns the opposite direction of the other so the boat goes straight. If they turned the same direction, the boat would go sideways like a sidewinder rattlesnake....

Make sure that it spins the correct direction for a car before spending too much time and money on it....

If it checks out, then I would go through it and freshen it up.

X2
I sold a 69 318 standard rotation motor out of a truck to a guy restoring a boat.
He had a reverse rotation one that was good.
He was happy to find a matching vintage year motor.

I am pretty sure you can change the cam, and add normal car stuff and make work.

I have a 440 out of a boat and there were a few specific parts that were for a reverse rotation only. The dist had a weird hold down and the camshaft is opposite along with the gear for the dist. If you do have a reverse get the crank polished so the rear seal does not leak, no idea why. all the bottom end pans were for a boat, like a cast aluminum oil pan. I would google 340 Chrysler marine and you should get some good info.

You can use the heads and the intake for an auto application, just change the valve springs, get rid of the rotators and use a leveling spacer on the intake to level the carb.

Are you talking about an intermediate shaft hold down under the distributor?

Knurl on the crank is in a reverse direction, when you spin it clockwise it tries to pull oil past the seal instead of pushing it back into the engine. Apart from that they can be used in cars, with the correct cam and dizzy drive.

yeh........n engine does not have to be a twin to be reverse. some single engine boats showed up reverse.

Yep, but things like the crank will be mirror images of the reverse spinning engines and need to be replaced....

But as you said, "add normal car stuff and make it work"....

Um You sure? I just changed the cam pan, dizzy etc. It is on an engine stand right now. Seems ok when I rotated it by hand.

Yeah that's it. I tell you what I sold all the "boat" stuff on ebay, think reg a body stuff demands a price, it paid for the price of the motor and some!

Is the block any stronger than a regular 340? I wasn't planning on using anything from it except maybe the crank and rods. Its been sitting for couple years and has surface rested now. I only paid $50 for it. And it came with a new engine stand.

I'm afraid a leveling carb spacer for the marine intake would need to be custom made.

I'm ignorant on the subject but what exactly makes the motor spin the opposite direction. Is the firing order backwards?

A lotta marine engines use a wedge spacer to achieve that marine angle,, so it may be it can be removed,, or a second one reversed and added to make a hi-rise,, The wedge spacer is readily avail, have used a few..

I don't believe the block is any different,, but you can use the block, crank (with knurl polished off if nec) rods, etc.. the used pistons would have thrust wear on the opp side of pistons,, but could be serviceable, I believe.. and they'd be low comp..

As mentioned,, the cam is diff,, as is the starter and drive,, the alternator fan,, the distributor, because the cam turns opp direction, it tries to push the int. shaft UP,, so dizzys have mods to accept thrust, if the automotive style water pump is used,, it'll have a different ,, or non directional impellor.. firing order backward,, and often a low profile dizzy cap.. I prob forgot something..

hope it helps

Picked up a boat 71 340 block a couple years ago, at least I think it was a boat block because there were no serial numbers stamped in the block and the dip stick hole had a plug in it. Was just a block and main caps but I put a Muscle Motors 416 forged stroker kit in it and stuffed it in my 71 Duster and man the thing is a beast! Go for it, a lot of those old boat motors were fresh water cooled and even though they seen some use at 4000 rpm they usually didn't have many hours on them.

I had one it was a 1972 boat motor
From marysville Ohio . it was a great littie engine in a 71 dart I replaced the crank the cam had it machine to .030 over an line hone cleaned the cylinder wall . it ran a best of 12.03 60ft@1.62 @ 110.68 with ported j heads
Just my 2 cent oh I forgot the boat that my engine came out of had been on fire .😁 it was a 340engine
