Hey everyone, the title pretty much says it. I just bought a LD4b off a guy and there is some cracks. One below the T-stat housing and one in the area the temperature sensor threads into. The one below the T-stat housing doesn't go all the way through, and the one by the temperature sensor doesn't go into the water jacket part of the manifold but I'm guessing it goes into the thread area (haven't pulled the sensor yet so I don't know).

For my question I want to know if this is actually repairable or not, and if it is where's a good company or person to get this welded up around Columbus, Ohio for a decent cost. Thanks in advance.

Unless someone local is going to weld it up for next to nothing I would look for a different intake. Just my two pennys.

I'd hate to get rid of it, I'd be willing to pay as long as it isn't a crazy number.

I like the epoxy idea. Only thing is, you need to get a magnifying glass out and find the ends of the cracks. Drill small holes at the ends of the cracks to stop them, or they will continue to grow.....much like cracks in cast iron. Then, epoxy it all up. Least that's my opinion.

Any decent welding shop with a tig welder can grind the cracks and tig them back in.

Thanks for the help guys, would some high temp jb weld work?

no . use the same epoxy head porters use on heads when they break through i cant remember the name of it now someone here will know the name .

Call your local welding SUPPLY shop and find out who is the better tig welding shops in the area. Super clean the cracks and then the intake. Then take the part to be welded. If you do the dirty work (aluminum must be super clean) the cost of welding shouldn't cost that much. This is a easy fix.

welding aint cheap, cost me $30 to tig weld a SS fuel rail together...Got a community college around? Show the instructor what you want and I bet he gives it to a student and supervises. Id just drill the crack end with a tiny drill bit, fill it with iron powder infused glue (Q-bond) and send it to get powder/jet hot coated. Will seal most small cracks, also useful on porous factory AL slant ion beam welded intakes. That Q-Bond is sold at my industrial supply store and is remarkable. They glued a 6" pipe to a flange and you can hang on it.

whoever does it, make sure the very ends of the cracks are drilled w/ a small bit before tig welding it, like stated above.

I like the idea of checking out a community college. It's knocking out two birds with one stone because I have to go to columbus state during the week anyway. Thanks for the help guys!

theres an easy way and a hard way and your own stupid way .so do what ever you want .im done giving any opinions on this site .

So going to a school to see if it can be used to help students wanting to learn how to weld aluminum while probably doing it for free is stupid?

Columbus cold weld but they ain't cheap.

That's who I thought could do it as well, but before I posted this thread I called them and the guy I talked too said they didn't do any aluminum welding. They did all the machine work on my dusters slant.

its just a saying that is used north of you on a regular basis . its not an attack on you. sorry not to explain more clearly . what im saying is nuttin personal .

Looks like the intake was on an engine that froze up when it got cold outside.

I bet there is more hidden damage.

I would get another intake

That would explain why there's a crack below the thermostat....
