my filler for the gas tank is completely screwed and leaks tons of gas when i make right turns. I don't want to catch on fire thats why i bought a brand new filler but i don't know how to remove the gas tank to install. anybody know how to do that?

There is a singe strap that holds the tank up, you also have a ground strap and the sender to undo. The best bet is to drive the car until there is little to no fuel left in the tank. You will probably need a new tank O ring for the filler neck. It is a bit of a fight to jiggle the tank off the filler tube but not a bad job. There is 3 screws that hold the filler neck to the body as well, and a large rubber gasket in the trunk area. You will also see a small tube from the filler neck to the tank that will have to be disconnected.

I think that's it since it's been a while since I had my tank out.

What he said, however I think your gas tank filler neck seal is bad not the filler neck. Best picture

no its the filler itself like i said I just bought it and was driving it back and my friend was right behind me. he told me gas was coming out of the tank when i make sharp turns. And honestly your right about the little to no gas i just don't know how to start this you know. wants the difference between filler neck and the filler neck seal?

There are 2 seals, One on the body where you put the gas in. The other is at the tank itself. Getting ready to replace my tank and both seals. It doesn't seem to hard to do. There are several places on this site with instructions, or purchase a repair manual.
Ask away if you have any other questions.

The main problem is the stock filler tube has no baffle to stop gas from being forced up the tube on sharp RH turns. This is exacerbated with a full(er) tank. Check that the rubber seal on the cap is in good shape and is still pliable so it seals to the neck's lip. The cap is vented to allow air into the tank as the level drops so even if you have a perfect seal on the cap it will still leak out the vent. Another area to check is the rubber seal at the tank/filler neck juncture. This is not the flat rubber seal on the trunk floor the fill tube passes thru. This is just a weather seal for the sheet metal opening. The tank seal is a doughnut shaped sleeve that seals the gap between the filler neck and the tank. Rubber hardens and can develop cracks or even split over time. If gas leaks here it drools down the side of the tank and right onto the exhaust pipe.

There are baffled tubes available, Layson's is one source, or you can make one yourself but it will have to be welded in. New caps are also available but are ridiculously expensive last time I looked. If you replace it be sure you get an original replacement for the 65. I've tried a bunch of different caps and nothing works better. Replace the doughnut if you pull the tank. It is going to be really stuck to the tube/tank if its still original (its been there 50 years!). A leak here should be readily obvious by wetness on the drivers side of the tank.

Note that the filler tube passes through the rear luggage area under the back glass in your car, so that adds a few things you will have to consider......

thanks a lot man i will try that. also would there happen to be a video or some sort on how to do this at least with pics so i have a better idea thanks.

Frankly I have not looked into a baffled fill tube for my Foumula S as yet. I installed a flip cap and adapter made by a member here and am waiting to see how that works on stopping the leak issue. I've seen the baffled tubes listed on Laysons web site. It can't be anything more than a metal plate spot welded into the tube to deflect the sloshing gas back towards the tank. It has to allow gas to flow around it or you won't be able to fill up. I did cut up the fill tube for my '74 Duster and the baffle was a long shallow U shaped channel that divided the tube in half and the end had a bent down tongue shaped piece IIRC. Not sure the science behind how it works.

Here's a pic I found on line for a Ford but this should give you an good idea of what is needed.

Those are dome lights down there! I agree with the damraider cap. Make a vent tube on top of the filler neck and direct it down out of the trunk/cabin. My 65 had the factory Valiant racing stripe when I bought it (a patch of stripped paint under the gas cap where it always dripped)
