Have not been "involved", other than spectating, Drag Racing since 1989 or so. Was that way even way back then. Don't remember the specifics but the guy I was helping was using a trans brake delay box....being an electrical genius his box worked like a champ....instant, reliable release that repeated itself everytime. Cost him under $40 to build. Went to the Old Dutchmans Classic one year, NHRA made him pull it out of the car as it did not have one of there stickers on it. Cost him damn near $400 to get a "legal" delay box....that was slower and less consistent than the one he built. We ended up hiding his up under the dash and making up some dummy wiring to get thru tech with it.....
