MRL Mild 383 Build

-
That's a deal for a really nice engine. That baby will make a 4000lb B-Body scoot.

Thanks for the build and taking the time to post! That's a badass 383! Also thanks alot for the tip on the FBO box! I can't wait to try it on my junk.

I have lowered it to $7200 obo I need to sell it so money talks. need to make room in the shop.

Hi, looks great, KB pistons..what P#are the pistons? The original post says KB flat tops but they don't look like flat tops, maybe flats with valve notches. Curious to the P# used.

What size headers were used for the dyno run?

KB162 and 2.00" on the headers. The pistons are flat top, and yes they have pockets for the valves.

Thanks for posting. My 383 is stock....Stock out of my garage

Someone needs this 383. I'm willing to sell this at or below cost to free up space and capital. Go ahead make me an offer and get a super great deal.

This is not an all out how much power can I squeeze out of an engine type build. I did not do a lot of work on the heads, just a good valve job and a mild port clean up. The cam is pretty small and the drivability will be very nice. I think it has great torque down low considering that the 383 has no stroke, 3.38". Yes there is a lot left in this combo. Spend about 40hrs on the heads and it will go over 500HP, but that wasn't the point here. I wanted a mild 383 that you can drive anywhere, anytime.

BTW a stock HP 383 was rated at 335HP GROSS with 10 to 1 compression. This one is making 100HP more than that with less compression and the same drivability.

It's not just the parts in the engine Mike (though they are well thought out too) it's the way you put it together that makes it even better. 436 HP/460TQ, come on, this 383 should come with a whiplash insurance policy.

Here is a little 383 I put together. I just ran the snot out of it today. Its just a little stockish 383, nothing to out there. Build is as follows

383 block 30 over
383 crank
383 rods w/ARP bolts
383 oil pan
Summit racing oil pan gasket/windage tray
KB flat tops
Procomp straight plug heads, mild clean up
Aluminum roller rockers
MRL custom hydraulic roller 227/231 .550"
RPM intake
Proform carb 750 mech
FBO Ignition(Out-performed the MSD 7!)

It ran well, made good power and was all in by 5200rpm.

436HP at 5200
460+TQ from 3750-4800rpm peaked at 467tq

Just curious how did the FBO outperform the MSD 7? Better down low, or throughout the curve? By how much?

It was better start to finish. It made about 7tq more down low and 5-6hp on the top.

Nice build Mike. It just proves you don't need a 440 or a stoker kit to have a good street engine that will cruise down the road without hassle and will set you back in the seat when you want some fun.
