With 26" rear tires I have just under 1.5" of clearance between the front of the tire and the wheel opening at the rocker. If I go to a 28" tire, that will leave a scant 1/4" to 3/8" clearance without moving the rear end back - unless I'm missing something.

What kind of clearance do you guys have with 28" tires in that area?

Hmmm...On my Duster, Ive got 27" tires 255/60-15 and I have about 2" clearance front and about the same (a little less) in the back. ??

71 Demon 28x12x15. About 1" to wheel opening.

The responses, so far, are curious. Another member here (Demon 408) tells me he has 1/4" to 1/2" clearance with a 275/60 (which is 28").

Yeah, it is weird. Dubob has more clearance toward the back, opposite of my car. Maybe just loose tolerances?

May be variances from factory as well as what's been done to the car. Could also be differences from tire maker to tire maker. My Demon had a spring relocate done when I bought it. May be some differences there, has Mopar SS springs. When I was researching the front lip on the wheel well always seemed to be the tight spot. Too bad you're so far away, I'd let you try one of mine under it to see.

Depends on the springs used, the ride height, front hangers, etc.

The super stock springs have a different front segment length, so they actually move the axle center back a little bit. AFCO springs like the ones I run on my Duster also have a different front segment length than stock. Although my tires are only 26" tall, you can see they're more centered in the wheel openings than stock.

Lots of variables.

Yeah, I'm thinking it must (mostly) be a spring thing. I've got MP spring relocation hangers and ESPO springs - which likely use stock dimensions.

So you already did the relocation using MPP hangers which only have one hole.

See if there is a enough eat to drill a new hole rearward of the one they gave you. Like the rms hangers.

Here is mine moved 1.5" back with RMS relocation boxes and 28's.

I run 275/60/15 Cooper Cobras on my 68 dart sedan and have about 5/8" clearance to the rocker. I can't imagine radial tires grow too much. You'll probably be fine with 3/8".

I've used custom made 1/4" plates, in between the front eye mount and the surface it bolts to, to move everything back a bit. But I would feel uncomfortable to use any more than 1/4".

As noted, production tolerences leave a lot to be desired so clearances from car-to-car as well as on the same car frome side-to-side can vary. Past accidents and body work can also have an affect.

Oops, my bad. I should have said MP offset hangers, not relocation. So, no meat there. Relocation is what I actually should have done (10 years ago).

Maybe you're right. I want to do my homework to avoid laying out cash and then having an "Ah, crap!" moment that requires more cash to fix.

72blu...your tire size and ride height is perfect!

Thanks!

The MP offset hangers are what I run on my car as well. You could probably drill a new hole in the hanger but I don't think that will get you that much. Or get a set of springs that have a different front segment length like the AFCO's. Both accomplish the same thing.

If you 1.5" clearance with 26" tires, you should have 1/2" clearance with 28" tires. I have about 1/2"- 3/4" clearance with 28" tires on mine. I've thought about putting a spacer in the front spring perch so I can go to bigger tires, but I only have about 1/4" of threads left on the front perch studs, and they are the offset ones so I can't change the studs out. With stock perches, you could probably do it fairly easily, but don't want to go too much because of the driveshaft.

Yeah man, I hear ya. If anything, you can always run a small 1/4" thick spacer behind the front spring hanger.

That being the case you can just use spacers for the front hangers.

Just got done checking out your website Preston. Thats a really killer Duster. Love it!

Thanks, crj1968!

I had to grind out the hole in the spring perch as well. 1/4 at the front mount and a tad more at the perch. and a new driveshaft as well.(68 FormulaS clone)

Thanks, yeah that's the other piece of the puzzle. I'm planning a drive shaft upgrade too and want to make friggin' sure the rear is where it needs to be.

If you're going to get a new driveshaft anyways, then space it as much as you need. If you're going to space it more than 1/4', you should probably weld the spacer in place. I just checked, and I did end up making 1/4" spacers for mine. Part of the reason I spaced it was to get the geometry of the rear hangers right for better launches.
