Gas Monkey garage Hemi swap

I liked both cars just the way they were. Why trash two really nice cars?

Agree...I turned when they pulled the hood off of the 71...I know its just fake TV but those Assmonkees still ruined a REAL sweet 71.........:banghead:

The '71 didn't look all that clean to me. Between the blemishes that TV hides on a car and the fact nobody actually verified it as an original 340 / 4 speed car for me to see, it could easily have been a cloned up 318 / auto car as far as I'm concerned.

Personally, I thought the show was a blast. For the most part, I baby and pamper my Challenger, but oh how I'd love to jump in that 392 Scat Pak and beat the hell out of it before it got crushed.

I particularly thought it was a hoot how many obstacles they ran into that we ran into on our cars and solved the issues a long time ago. It was comical watching guys who normally work on Fords and Chevys try to work on Mopars. They're out of their element.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show as long as they were working on the Mopars!

I have to agree, any show that does Mopars instead of the usual LS is worth watching, if if it is only for comedic value.

Yeah, I was laughing most of the time. Richard puts no value on a car except for the almighty dollar. And I couldn't help but laugh each time Aaron and the group discovered another obstacle of mixing the old with the new.

Overall, you KNOW Chrysler knew what they were going to do and blessed the whole thing. I have to agree it was an hour long Dodge commercial for the R/T Scat Pak, a package this is very difficult to find/buy at this point. The dealers put them right up there with the Hellcat in that regard.

it blows my mind how many of you guys are talking trash on these guys! They are living the dream. they are making good money building awesome cars. so what if they are not your dream car. they are getting paid ALLOT of money to build hot rods and beat the snot out of them every time a camera is pointed there direction. of coarse the drama is played up. its TV. if they were 100% factual and didnt show the drama no body would watch. they gotta broaden the audience. Its a car show on TV, be thankful its not another show about fat red necks brewing booze in the woods or fat retarded family's raising bastard children like honey poo poo. I think its pretty damn fun to watch. I know they are never 100% correct with the tech stuff and that the car sales are mostly made up but its entertainment.

100% agreed, I've said it more than once myself, I am sure anyone here would live this life if given the chance. End of the day these guys sell cars (I posted a nice one that sold on ebay at a great deal). TV is TV without a storyline (script) there is no TV.

At least they were able to get spark in the old bus by fixing a spark plug wire.......

YA you noticed that too !! I chuckled at that one also . It's just mindless entertainment that's all. You can't take it seriously.:violent1:

They found out the getrag 6sp wouldn't fit, didn't realize the stock 4sp could be put on with a little work (but that hemi making 485hp the 833 may not like it in stock form..) and they had a T56 6sp on the shelf - they went with the T56 not a 5 speed.. these guys also do not get paid by Discovery, just like the street outlaws guys do not get paid..

Alright, I watched the episode.

What is it exactly that everyone is complaining about?

The got a 392 out of a Scat Pack car that HAS to be crushed because it's a pre-production car and the government mandates they're crushed. Ok, no loss there.

They put it into a '71 340/4 speed Challenger RT. Ok, that part sounds bad. But, it wasn't the original 340 in that car. It was advertised as having a warranty block, but who knows. So, it was a non-numbers car. Ok, not as bad. At all.

They encountered the same exact problems that every mopar guy has encountered doing a late model Hemi swap. And dramatized it a little bit. My guess is they knew about most, if not all, of those issues before they started. "Hey look, we have a brand new Mopar branded T56 on the shelf". Yeah, it was a "surprise" the getrag wouldn't fit? Sure ok. But that wouldn't make good TV. Ok, so, that's TV.

They cut the floor and crossmember. Just like everyone else that installs a T56 has to do. And, has been done, more than once, by members of this very forum. And, judging by the highlights of next weeks episode, they deal with it the same way as everyone that's done it here. Ok, so what's the issue?

And yeah, the put a Magnumforce transformer system in it. They put coilovers and airbags on EVERYTHING, so I fail to see this as a surprise. And yeah, most of the late model hemi-swaps include a coilover front end for header and oilpan clearance. I mean, sure, I think its funny that no one seems to know anything about torsion bars, but that goes for a lot of people on this site too judging by the number of coilover threads we have going. So...

What is the big deal? They did all the same stuff that EVERYONE that does a late model Hemi and T56 swap has to do. And dramatized it a little for TV. And? Was that it?

But holly hell! They took out the 340! And installed a Mexican hemi that will cruise at 70 mph and 2200 rpm with the a/c cranked and get 25 mpg! While making 385 hp! They could have spent 20k on the fossil 340 and made 10 more hp, half the dependability, half the mpg and disrupted the earths gravitational pull by doing something other then what Chrysler did in the 70's

Right?

And hey, that's 485 hp. :evil3:

Don't get me wrong, I love the 340 in my Duster. And I wouldn't swap it for a modern engine. Not because they're made in Mexico (hey weren't a ton of these cars built in Windsor? That's Canada! Commie bastards!), but because I don't want to deal with all of the electronics. I like simple. But yeah, that new Hemi probably puts down 50-60 hp more than my 340, and gets about 2x the gas mileage. Ouch.

Hey at least they are gonna lose money on the car!

Yep, efficiency is a magical thing. The 5.7 in my car probably doubles the horsepower of the 318 that was in it when I bought it and is starting to get better gas mileage too as I get the tune dialed in. For the longest time it didn't matter what I did, my car would get 16 mpg. New rear end on the 318? 16 mpg. Hemi swap with carb? 16 mpg. Fuel injection swap? 16 mpg. 6 speed swap? 16 mpg. Cleaned up tune? 18-20 finally. Guessing I can squeeze some more, but without a dyno to do tuning on it's hard to really dial in the different load conditions steady state.

Actually, they'll probably make money on it. Having received most the parts for free, they've go a big head start over most of us...

Amen! I'd trade my desk job for theirs any day. There's so much BS garbage TV out there that I would swear kills brain cells if you watch them. I haven't watched the episode but from the sounds of it, taking the engine from a car that was madated to be crushed and putting it into a non-numbers matching Challenger seems like a good swap to me. Now someone can actually drive the car with some reliability, decent gas mileage, and power to boot!

Yeah I don't think its gonna sell for $150k like Richard thinks. So, they probably will lose money. As far as the "free" parts, someone has to pay taxes on them.

But starting with a non-numbers RT that you allegedly just paid $42k for probably isn't the best idea. He paid too much for the car to begin with. Well, at least if he actually paid that. Which he probably didn't.

these guys have more fun at work on a daily basis then i do on my best day of work.......
