Dumping the exhaust behind the rear axle?

-
first of all , you can dump the exhaust out before the axle without shooting the heat directly at the axle and without dumping it on the ground and spraying dirt everywhere. there ARE more than 2 angles that can direct the pressure. second, if you have good door , trunk seals and any random holes sealed up , you are not going to get the fumes 90% of the time. third, if you get good mufflers, its not even going to be THAT loud. I have ran a ton of cars this way and I have never had an issue, and im not a fan of loud obnoxious sounding cars unless im at a track.

Just my humble $0.02 worth but i am a fan of the SS or chrome turn downs just showing outside the rear bumper. I had a pro shop put them on my Comet and I will do the same with my Barracuda.

Thanks for all the replies guys, I am still undecided with how I want them ran. We don't have to pass emissions in Indiana, and I don't have any kids I'm worried about riding in the back seats.

We do have a lot of cruise ins in gravel parking lots and in fields, so dust may be an issue, however I might be able to get away with changing the angle of the outlet.

T/A style may be the way to go. I'll keep you guys updated

A big factor to consider is where and how much you will drive the car. I drive my Barracuda a lot!! 3 or 4 times a weeks, in the city, 15-30 each time. I had some fumes coming into the car and it drove me crazy until I found the reasons. Every one that rode with me would always complain. There were many reasons for the fumes but my point is....if you plan to drive your car (especially with other people in the car) you don't want any exhaust fumes in there. I solved my exhaust fume problem, FYI - my exhaust exits at my rear bumpers.
If you're going to sit in traffic you'll eventually going to get a headache from fumes.

This is my son's 70 Valiant. The PO had the exhaust dumped behind the axle. I like it.

I liked it too, until I got into dry areas where others had their cars parked and it stirred up a bunch of dust. You'll get some dirty looks, and maybe even some comments, lol.

i did it on my 68 fastback, i used a TTI X-pipe, dumped right at the axles, I will get ya pics of the system, not on my car though, as I am working on the underside.

Yep, dust bowl. Not only your car but everyone around you at the car show.

To me, not doing the exhAust the correct way is just lazy. Every time I see a car with dumps over the axle or right before the tires I really just seem their car as junk to me. And the guy driving it as a lazy ***.

LOL ^^

I like it...my car didnt sound as good going all the way out the back....it really changes the tone...:)

Keep in mind, laws in most sates say something like "exhaust must exit passenger compartment" or some such. So, if it does not come out from under the car at some point, they can legally ticket you.

In California there is no full inspections. We only have emissions testing for 1976 and after vehicles. Anything 1975 or prior is emissions inspection exempt.

Your comment lost me and I feel dumb now. lol. Is "dumps over the axle" any exhaust that goes over the axle to exit the rear, or does it mean something different? If an exhaust does not exit over the axle or out the side, where else is it supposed to go?
(I'm asking this in all sincerity; not trying to make a smart-*** rebuttal).

Equium, I am talking about the turn downs stop right over the axle. Not going to the back. Seems like a lot of guys don't want to mess with the bend for the axle because it's "too hard". To me it's just lazy. To each his own I guess. I wouldn't build a permanent system that dumped under the car, before the rear wheels, or just over the axle. If I was looking to buy a car and it didn't go all the way to the back I would wonder what else the owner half assed. Especially when they claim they rebuilt the engine or transmission themselves. NO THANK YOU. Or brakes for that matter.... I really like to go fast, but I would over build the brake system before I built a hi powered engine for the damn thing. Stopping is nice. Lol

To me though, it's ok on a truck because the exhaust only has to come out from under the cab to be legal and safe. It's more of a truck thing to me anyway dumping the exhaust just before the rear axle.

There is a typo in my post. It should read. 3.5 inches round into an X pipe. 3" round out into T/A style mufflers. 3" oval from mufflers to rocker panel.

My experience as well, you can always end it before the axle and if you don't like it just take a trip to the muffler shop and add tailpipes. You just have to try things for yourself and decide. Funny story, back in the day I ran a pretty potent small block duster on the street with 3" flowmasters, no dumps, just ending at axle. One night I got stopped and received a warning for no tailpipes. I had some short dumps made and hung them below the rear bumper so it looked like I had tailpipes to please the cops. I even had someone tell me the car sounded better with the new tailpipes!

Was dumped in front of the axle. Tired of the noise and fumes. Bought a box of 3" mandrel bent 90's and 45's. Spent last Saturday running new tail pipes. Added cut outs behind the headers while I had it apart. Took most of the day but it came out pretty nice.

I suppose the 68 Hurst Hemi Dart LO23 had all "lazy ***" people working on it. Yep just "junk" to
me too. Certainly "lazy ***" drivers. Sounds like a Moparts rant for sure. Sheez.:finga:

Yea I was really lazy when I did my system. Just slapped it together so I could get on with my busy day of laying on the couch.

Maybe some cars just cant get over the axle due to design issues.....like having air ride or a huge diff or narrowed rear ends or 4 link or all of the above.

No I wasn't totally offended.....just had to much coffee this morning.:blob:
