Champion Alum Radiators, anyone?

-
I have a champion in my duster, it fits great and cools extremely well considering I don't run a shroud on it.

Anyone ever mount a 26" Champion radiator to a smaller 22" opening radiator support??? Any issues to worry about"

Good question! I have the 22" opening and would rather not cut it.

Mine just came in yesterday.... My buddy has ran one in his impala for 1.5 years now (runs it hard all the time) with no issues... runs cool and everything is great. He is the reason I went with champion over all the other ebay radiators.

Good news...thanks! I should have asked the question in original post:

What motor and how much power are you cooling?

I tried a cc375 in my coronet and it would steadily creep to hot even down the road. Swapped out for a griffin and problem gone. You get what you pay for.

Have one in a 65 coronet with a pretty stout 440, never got above 180*, after 3 years it started leaking on both corners on the drivers side, replaced it with another one andits been great. Its a 26" 3 row

I've got 22" Champion in my car. Here are my likes and dislikes

Likes: Car runs nice and cool. Good cheap replacement that functions well.

Dislikes: Only top two bolt holes lined up, had to redrill the lowers. Shroud nut inserts came right out, had to replace with my own.

Overall Im very happy with the radiator. Works and does what it is suppose to! I would buy one again for the little bit of hassle I had to do to it.

I have a 26" 3 row Champion radiator & factory 26" shroud cooling the 512 stroker in my Roadrunner. Still has the 22" opening. Car runs cool as a cucumber, in all conditions.

Don't know on the fit up for an A-Body, but in a B-Body you need to use the factory mount holes on the driver side, and then drill the holes on the passenger.

Hope it helps.

I run a Champion CC374 in my Duster. That's a 26" 3 core that is listed for B/E bodies. The Duster had a 22" radiator in it originally and still has the 22" opening in the shroud. All I did to mount the radiator was tack weld a couple of nuts onto the front of radiator support like the factory did for the 22" radiator.

There's no problem putting a 26" radiator in front of the 22" shroud opening. In fact, it will still cool better like that than a 22" radiator would. You still have more surface area, and that surface area is still exposed to air that's going to be cooler than the radiator. Yes, the radiator would probably be a little more efficient if you opened up the radiator shroud so that the entire core was exposed, but we're not talking about much.

I run my Champion CC374 with a Ford Contour electric fan set up. I swapped to that because the car ran so COLD with the mechanical fan that it would take forever to just warm up to operating temperature. How's that for a problem to have? Anyway, everything works great with the Contour electric fan set up, they rarely come on when I'm actually moving, usually just at stop lights and things. Even when its 100*F or more they don't run continuously.

That's on a '68 340 with ported iron heads, 9.8:1 compression, bored .060" over, and making in the neighborhood of 420-430 hp.

And, there are quite a few threads on this already. A few folks have had some quality control issues with the Champions, and pretty much everyone has to drill new mounting holes because the "factory" ones are in the wrong spot for these cars. But, for a radiator that you can often get for around $200 depending on the model, that's not too bad.

Great info guys! Thank you.

While I usually agree with the "you get what you pay for" thought, it seems there are a quite a few happy Champion customers out there.

26" 4 core champion in my Demon. Running dual electric flex-o-lite pusher fans that have their own shrouds and at 605hp it stays cool in stop and go traffic up to 80F outside, at 90F in stop and go traffic it starts to get hot and can run at 200-210. Our weather mostly sucks at home in Canada, so it's almost never over 180deg in any kind of traffic.

Thanks for the info 72bluNblu!! I'll probably be installing a Champion radiator soon as well. Summer is just around the corner.

I swapped to that because the car ran so COLD with the mechanical fan that it would take forever to just warm up to operating temperature.

Wouldn't the thermostat remain closed if it was too cold? I'm not sure why the engine couldn't warm up since the water doesn't circulate with a closed thermostat.

I, too, am running a Champion radiator in my Dart, and it's cooling an 11:1 390CID stroker that makes a bit less than 500HP at the crank. I regularly drive it on the street, and I frequently race the car.

I'd recommend them to anyone.
