Folks,

I am almost ready to put the snow blower away ..but I have a question..

With ethanol being added to the gas at the pumps...it is making it really hard on gas stabilizers to keep all good over the spring / fall period.. I have had to clen more than one of the carbs on my small gas engines..

Would my luck be better if i just ran the sucker dry of gas..or would the little plastic parts dry out and create another problem.

With this winter almost gone,I cannot afford to have the little beastie apart on the workshop table.

Thanks
Ian.

You can get a fuel / ethanol stabilizer. It is used in boats. Also, you can buy Shell's most expensive gas, as it is Ethanol free. One less thing to worry about.

there's no ethanol on p.e.i ..... yet . when did nova Scotia get the ethanol .

Just run the sucker out of gas. I tip mine two stroke Toro on it's side over a drain pan to get most of it out, and then fire it up and let it run for a few minutes. When it shuts off, I put the choke on and start it back up and it dies after a few seconds. Put it away until next season!

I run high test in my snowblower so I don't have this problem Ian. I also run it dry of fuel in the spring and so far have not had a problem. Start it up and let it run dry and you should be ok. If you want you can put some high test in it with stabilizer once the regular fuel is all gone.

Thanks guys... I knew you would have the answer..

This ethanol this is slightly insidious ... I used to use the regular gas stabilizer until I tried to start my snow blower a couple of yearsb ago...I my carb was gross. Found out that some oil companies were supplementing their gas with ethanol w/o specifying it on the pump..

Jim, I know that irving and Petro Can is doing it locally..and the Scot in me won't let me burn the high test (that is the only gas that the folks that I buy/service my gear from recommends) in my small engines...

For you snow blower guys..I have an 8 hp engine and I burnt just a tad under 8 Canadian gallons this year.

I have less faith in technology as I get older...I think the run dry method will be for me..

Many thanks, Ian.

We still have 4 feet of snow in our back yard...

I've been using regular Stabil in E10 gas for several years. Seems to work great.

I use stabil in everything. Cars, trucks, lawn equipment, chain saw, pressure washer, generator, boat motor, anything with an internal combustion engine. It works great, every time. Never had an issue.

I use blue STABIL in everything anymore that sits very long. I add to the gas can before buying gas for my small engines then no guessing

I look at it as cheap insurance

I also try to get pure gas, luck for me there were several places close I can get it. But they are real proud of it, more than premium most of the time.

Run dry is another option but I'm afraid of the seals and gaskets drying out then it leak when you fill it.

I bought a weed wacker that was dry for years, the bulb broke as soon as I pushed it. I think STABIL is the best for keeping the stuff pliable.

Regular STA BIL is a great product, however it does NOTHING for ethanol damage. NOTHING.

They do however offer a STA BIL that says ETHANOL in big letters on the container. It does both. It stabilizes the fuel and protects against ethanol damage.

I never ever recommend draining gas out of anything. The drying out will accelerate the damage. Add the STA BIL ETHANOL to the fuel and you will be fine.

Cam 2 or VP for the last fill-up of the fall and you'll be fine in the spring. Around here it's about 8 bucks a gallon and it smells freakin' awesome!

Cam 2 or VP ...race gas ?

Given any time, I have at least 2 and maybe 3 engines stored waiting for the next season..

Drying out does concern me..

Hey Grassy, your no-snow period is so short it hardly pays to shut the thing off. Just leave it running.lol
As for me, here in Mb.;We only had snow enough to blow, ONCE this winter. And once I shoveled. And once I broomed it.
Sorry. I couldnt help myself.
I know you guys mostly have a tough time out there and I dont envy your seasons one bit.

Rub it in :)

At Christmas, it was still in the teens...we thought we were going to get a BC winter....then January happened..and it didn't stop..reminded me of what it was like as a kid and how much I want to escape future winters...maybe in 3 years..

Just before we shipped out to Cuba..we had 3 blizzards in 7 days..for the last one, thetown didn't even bother to plow..

What would the job prospects for an apprentice electrician in Mb..just found out that I friend I grew up with teaches in Winnipeg..

Ian.

Hey Grassy don't let 1 irregular winter fool ya they don't call it Winterpeg for nothing eh! how many days of -40c did you have on the East Coast this year ? That's freaking spring in the Peg eh , what year apprentice are you ? there's usually work here on the Left Coast for trades and you can drive your mopar pretty much any day of the year .

Yeahbut, I heard its pretty expensive to live out there, on the West Coast.
I think our winter was pretty warm and dry this year. More so than usual. I think Atlantic Canada got our snow, and we got quite a bit of imported warm air, from the left coast and points south.Very little cold and briefly only.
I have no desire to leave Mb. It may be the last great place to live,in the world.Well, except maybe, for Medicine Hat.Maybe.

That statement certainly explains a lot about you there buddy , you need to get out and about more , the cost of buying is really crazy here on the coast but the cost of living isn`t much different beyond house prices , I pay 50 bucks more for the same square footage here as I paid in Windsor Onterrible but my pay is almost double , food is pretty comparable so are utilities , My monthly nut is about 860 bucks plus food and fun , that includes my Apt and a garage I rent separate for the Barracuda , Gas was 117.9 yesterday for regular 87 I paid 134.9 for Chevron 94 octane that is pure gas and something you can`t get in Manitoba ,one of my good friends lives in the Peg but he travels all summer and bitches about the crime all winter . I`ll be buying in good old Onterrible as soon as I find the patch that suits my needs but I am definitely keeping my place here for the winter and Skeeter seasons eh LOL !

:)

My son, Calum...graduates from Kingstec this June..thought he was going to apprentice in Alberta..with the rest of the Maritimers..but you know how that is going..

Well, here in Mb one can; own a home on payments and live on $18000 gross easy. And I know peoples that live reasonably well(renting) on as little as $13000. The wages here are typically $20 to $25 per hour for an experienced guy like me, and will go somewhat higher in the dealerships. Gas recently went up to 99.9 from 89.9 a couple of weeks ago.A restaurant meal is typically $12 or less,Fast food is $8 to$10, all taxes in. I pay $430(basic) to insure my 68 Formula S clone, annually, and just under $1200 for my 2006 Buick-Allure,with all the best coverage.
The only crime we have here in this rural town is a bit of littering. In 32 years, almost nothing of value has disappeared off my wide open un-fenced yard, with nothing more than zippers on my sheds for security. I never lockup my cars, and up until about a year ago never considered locking up my house.
Granted, a half hour away, crime is beginning to increase (mostly robbery),ever since their RM has invited aliens into their community. But I think they still only have 3 or 4 cops for their town of 16000 or so inhabitants.
So the way I see it, there is no need to get out more. Im already in the Garden of Eden
FWIW, I am making plenty of power with 87E10. Enough to go 93 in the 1/8th. I dont miss hi-test one bit.

It's all relative and being happy where you are is more important than any amount of money or stuff so rock on but as for the high test I wear it for aftershave no woman worth dating would be attracted to a guy wearing regular with ethanol in my book .LOL ! yeah it really pays to live in the boonies when it comes to crime on the great flatlands , the big cities are becoming war zones , not a day goes by that I don't see another posting of a violent crime in the Toon or the Peg and never mind Calgary .

I keep Stabil in every gas can for my small engines, I also mix it with high test.
I have about every small engine know to man, chainsaw, pressure washer, snow blower, lawn mowers, weed eater, leaf blower, wood chipper, 4-wheelers, hedge trimmers, etc.
No matter if they have set for over a year they start.

Do not run it out of fuel, it will suck all the dirt from the bottom of the tank.
Fill the tank full before putting it away.
