This isn't a mopar issue but my dad has a 68 mustang with a 302 in it. He is running a full msd ignition with a 6al box, bullit distributor and msd coil. At high rpm there is a loud popping noise that sounds a little like a back fire then it starts doing it at all rpm and cutting out bad. The distributor is also hot to the touch after running the engine. We replaced the distributor, coil, and took off the 6al and it still did it. I told him it could possibly be a fuel issue fouling out a plug so he is changing the carb tomorrow but I figured I would ask here tonight and try to get ahead of the ball. I'm not great with electronics btw. What are your thoughts though?

sounds like you got the ignition covered it maybe a lean condition rev it till it pops and add a little choke see if that helps . look for pinched of chafed wires could it have jumped the cam timing or maybe a cam going flat this is all considering your timing is right .

And what do the plugs look like.
Your suspicion of fuel fouling can be easily verified.

has it ran decent since the rebuild?

I would suspect the timing chain to be a off a link

is it a flat tappet cam ?
you may have wiped a lobe

I'm not real sure on the cam to be honest. A friend of his rebuilt it and I haven't talked to him about it but it's a very reputable shop in cincinnati and they did break in so I am guessing he didn't screw anything up. It didn't do it right after the rebuild that I know of. It started a few weeks ago and he drove it home to work on it. After taking the ignition apart he drove it again and it still did it. That's when he replaced everything then drove it again today I am guessing since he called and asked me about it some more. I told him to throw one of my Holleys on and see what happens but that was the last I heard.

Check your grounds, and Check your voltage to the distributor too, maybe check it at first and then after it starts running bad. maybe your losing voltage?

I love the mopars but I also have a 302 in my toyota. Its my "daily driver" :burnout:

He had the carb changed before I could get over there and it was running rough but it felt a lot different. He got it back to the shop and looked everything over and realized he forgot to hook up one of the plug wires. Took it out again and it ran like a top. New Holley dp is on it's way!
