I was wondering if changing the distributor makes that much difference? I have a warmed up 360 with 350 HP. I don't have any problems with the stock distributor so should I bother even thinking of purchasing a new distributor?

Stock Mopar ignitions are some of the best ever produced. If your current stock dizzy is worn out then I could see how you want to go to an MSD or Mallory or something. If it were me though I wouldn't swap it unless I absolutely needed a new one or you were doing nothing but high RPM horsepower racing. I know of a lot of guys using stock Mopar ignitions in 450hp engines. Im using a stock distributor and a MSD 6AL box because it was given to me. If it hadn't been given to me I would just be using the stock ignition.

read my "firecore distributor issues" right below your post, i sure coulda spent that 300$ elsewhere, but thats the human thing , we r always lookin for a little more!

If you have the factory stock "smog curve" distributor, there is NO doubt you can gain performance, low end response, perhaps better mileage and generally all around "better."

ALL distributors (except heavy trucks) built 68 and later have some sort of smog curve, IE slower, longer, and in many cases, doo-dads in the vacuum line to retard vacuum advance.

As we progress into 71--73--76, etc, it just gets worse and worse.

If you simply take the stocker and advance the initial timing "a bunch" you can easily get into a situation where timing is over-advanced "on the top end"

There are many many many threads on here about timing, advance curves, etc. You CAN rework a factory distributor. Two choices that I know of

1. Weld up and file the slots so they are shorter

2. FBO makes a kit to recurve stockers, incorporating an accessory advance limiter plate. I don't know how good or bad these might be.

I was using a 68 340 dizzy that I had a nice curve into, I bought a dizzy from Mancinni that you can curve from the top making it real easy to adjust but it doesn't run any different. I think the dizzy was 165.

no problems , leave it be. if when u punch it, it accels good, it is fine. I run a moparperf electronic distrib. for the street the setup is around 15* advance ( without vacuum advance) at around 750 rpm, +20* more around 3000 rpm. down the road some vacuum advance helps fuel mileage. keep plugs and plug wires fresh

If its working for ya' stay with it but going to a msd is a great upgrade only ignition i'll run..have never had an issue with one..same can't be said for the mopar stuff..
