who is into "later" cars

'73 and up just plain ugly..grilles ugly,beak nose ugly,tailights ugly,interiors ugly..thats why people put '70-'71 noses and tailpanels on them cause' they want but don't have..70-'71 dusters best looking a body EVER!!!

Better ignition
better brakes IMO
larger upper ball joint
better engine mounts
bigger front spindles
large 5 x 4 1/2 wheel bolt pattern
lighter curb weight on some
no more of that left and rt hand tread stuff on the hubs
Chrome but not so much you have to remortgage your house to have it all redone. Or hope that sun does not hit it right and blind you as your taking a corner.
Safety upgrades except that stupid seat belt interlock thing I still have to bypass then remove.
Dusters, Demons, Dart Sports look fairly much the same to me most of the changes between years was cosmetics/sheet metal

I think anything older than 70 sorta looks like a box truck or some sorta bubble. Must be an old person thing.:poke::poke::poke:
 
I think they're cool, and I wanted one very badly in 1979. Kinda still do.
They can still be found inexpensively since there on the undesirable list still. An excellent example to show and go will cost under 10K. There out there. Mostly in the middle of the country like Ohio and many can be found in Washington or Oregon.

How bout the Aspen/Volare, I think those cars can be made into something. They had a Road Runner version and wasn't the Aspen offered in an R/T?

Yes, both are correct. The Plymouth had the Road Runner version and the Dodge had the R/T Super Coupe. There biggest draw back (up doin so to speak) is there weight. Also the ISO suspension.
Go to the FMJ only board.
 
I just sold my Aspen to buy my GTS back. It actually drove pretty decent. Not a real RT, had a 340 with 8 3/4 rear in it. I never got around to it, but 74 duster bumpers look pretty decent and shed some weight.

I never was much of a fan, but awhile ago I drove a '75 Valiant, and was impressed with the evolution. It was very comfortable, like a mini C-body. I actually like the sturdy bumpers. I would be happy to own a "later" a-body if one ever finds me.
 
if you want to build a car on a budget. It's hard to beat later A bodies. You can have a 340 four speed '73 Duster with power disk brakes, power steering, and big bolt pattern wheels for less than the cost of a '71 318 auto drum brake car. Who cares if the front and back look a bit different?
 
I have a 74 Duster and a 75 Dart
of the two, the 75 Dart is by far the nicer and better riding of the cars.
OK, it has a "beak", but it also has velour interior, shag carpet, vinyl top, 4 doors, an 8-tack and green paint.
I own it, and to perfectly honest, if you don't like it, that's fine. I didn't ask any one for gas money and there isn't a collection box set up in front to help fund any changes.
Keagan has replaced his data plate on his Scamp with one that says something to the effect of: "My build doesn't need your approval"
Cars are painted different colors everyday, mostly because people are different. If they weren't this would be a boring world and we would all be driving black model "T"s.
 
Don't forget later models can use unleaded gas-hardened seats- Just another positive. Other than the Sharks Tooth Grill and Gauage cluster. The newer Dusters (73, 74) are better cars. It's tuff to shake that old image, but it keeps the newer models cheap and eaiser to build. If you want the best cars in stock form, pick up a 73, 74 but don't tell anyone. It's a secret!
 
I love the beak cars. I think they look as good as the older cars.
I don't like the bumperettes and the heavy bumpers though, but that's easy to get around.........
Heck, i love all of the A-Bodies '67 to '76.
If any of you died in the wool pre '72 fans like the '67 to '69 Barracudas, they are the first beak cars.
The hood on my '74 Dart Sport fits a '69 Barracuda, so it has to be!
Advantages outweigh the negatives in my opinion on the '73 and up cars.
The biggest advantage is with the big bolt pattern brakes and suspension on the '73 and up cars.
I have no use for the small bolt pattern anything on the older cars with the weaker studs in the axles etc.
Electronic ignition and spool mounts for the engines and transmissions were a great plus as well as hardened seats in the heads for unleaded gas.
If you modify an older car as well as a newer car to take advantage of all of the positives from all years, then you will have the best of both worlds.
Get rid of the small bolt pattern, the points ignition, and the biscuit mounts on an older A-Body and install the big bolt pattern brakes and suspension, electronic ignition, spool mounts out of a '73 and up and then you will have something.
A lighter car with the higher compression engine with these upgrades would be a big plus.
Don't get me wrong, i like the pre '72 cars as well as the newer ones, but they both have their issues........
I just never liked the '66 and older cars.

its hilarious that the early A guys will say that early As are better built but yet the first thing they all do is upgrade suspensions and engine options with parts from the "less quality" later cars. If they don't upgrade an early A then it will probably spontaneously combust on the highway, yet a later car has all the upgrades everyone wants......from the factory :cheers:
 
Agreed, you just can't beat big bolt pattern for aftermarket wheel selection

I love driving this car. Much nicer ride than any a body and still looks good. Has a nasty 340 in it right now and I have the Original 360 engine is in my garage too.

There was a two door aspen? (I think) That I really liked with an original 360 still in it. It was a light blue color, guy wanted like 3k for it. Whenever I see one for sale they're always really cheap, even with a v8.

I like that aspens were available in a wagon unlike the post 66 A-body ...I am a wagon fan and I think a dream would have been a 70 dart wagon. A nice US built one based on the 2 door. there is a 70 dart wagon they made in Australia but it has a weird third world country look to it....and the steering wheel is on the wrong side.

Why Chrysler dropped the compact wagons after 66 in the U.S. market made sense but it would been a lot cooler if they hadn't.

Over the years I owned a 76 Aspen and a 80 Volare' wagon. Nice cars that I wish I still had.

I picked up a '73 Swinger parts car - the main body shell is horrible with rust through, but the front clip isn't bad at all. Ever since I got it the beak is growing on me...I keep debating trying to use the front fenders on my '72 (yeah, I know they won't fit as-is) just for the longer, cleaner look. Either that or maybe somewhere down the line buy an Aspen/Volare wagon and stick the whole '73 front clip on it to see what a later-model Swinger wagon would have looked like. Right now it's all wistful thinking, I've got too much work to do on my '72 before I can start another project.

So you change the bolt pattern on the early ones..certainly no big deal.

In a way your right. Then again.... Paying more for an earlier model that requires (to a degree) a real axle & front drum swap or disc change upgrade is an expensive item(s) to do for what you get stock on a later model.

On my '71, I did the Dr. Diff real axles with bearing installed.
The front drums set up is next.
A hefty upgrade price over the cheaper models.
 
My 1st car was a 78 Magnum. I kept it through my military service, and into my late 20's. Fell on hard times and had to send it away. It crushed me! Loved that car. We built a reasonable 360, threw in a 727, and a 3:23 geared 9 1/4 with a sure grip. Whipped an 86 Vette pretty handily as a 17 year old punk kid. I still look occasionally, if I could get a nice 78 at a price I could swing, I'd hold it forever. I am also a big fan of the late 70's b-body more doors. I need one of those old cop cars so bad. Have some special tricks in mind for one of those. Just think... Asskickins being handed down to big benz's audi's and bimmer's.
The car that got me into Duster's was a buddies black on black 73 Duster, 340, 4 gear! Guess I can be classified as one of the guys that digs the later cars!!!

I run the Moser axles on my duster..Wilwood front disc is the next upgrade..you want to own the nice '70-'71's its price ya' gotta' pay,and worth every penny..

As for those aspen rt's and volare r.r's certainly NOT a fan they stop making"REAL" roadrunners in 1970..just ANOTHER model mopar/fiat bastidized!!!
