so i am going to put a 6.1 in my 65 dart. i look daily for the right deal. problem is i never find them forsale in my state. you can find them on ebay. but then you pay shipping plus on average they want 5k for one. i got to thinking about something. so i am going to be putting my srt magnum up forsale to help fund my dart build. so here i am thinking i still owe 6000 on my magnum. i will have to come up with at lease 4000 for a hemi. (if i get that lucky) i could take the drivetrain and anything else i need. part the rest of the car out after and just pay off my car sooner. probably coming out paying even less the 3000 for everything i could need from a donor car. problem is am i crazy thinking about taking a perfect car apart to just junk it after? kinda sounds like a gas monkey garage episode lol.....

sounds like the kind of idea that would end with someone "stealing the car, wrecking it and snatching the motor"

you do have full coverage no?

on a side note, here is one for $105 dollars in Utah
(provided the reserve doesn't go up to high)

yes on the full coverage lol. one what in utah lol? ebay link?

It's your car, and your decision, and it may make financial sense. I just don't think I could do it personally, it would make me too sad, lol. As much time and effort as we put in restoring these cars, it's almost counterproductive to tear a good one apart, even if it is a newer car. We'll all probably be on forlx's only in 30 years welding those cars back together!

How much could you get for the car total if you sold it outright? If you can get 9k and only owe 6k then your already 3k up on the swap. How many miles do you have on it? Also I wanted to point you in a few directions if you haven't already been looking there, copart.com and salvagebid.com. I got a 35k mile challenger rollover off of copart 5.7 with 6 speed manual for about 3800 once it was all said and done. I've sold some parts off of it as well, one being the 3.92 getrag rear and axles for 1k. Just with that alone I'm down to 2800.
I'm not against tearing apart a new car either though. Just tossing you some things to think about.

So many times.... they aren't making them anymore.

Not this time!

Besides, the magnum can't be a classic in the future if some don't die today.

Risking insurance fraud, can't recommend and who ever said they stole the car to steal the motor out of it just implied you'd put a stolen motor in your car. Bad idea.

Totalling it out yourself and doing a buyback for the parts.... much more effective long- term fraud strategy, that I still don't recommend.

The big question is can you use 6K worth of parts off the Magnum. The engine is easy, the tranny is not so easy, it's a Nag 1 so not easy to make work, but it can be done. The rear is a fully independent, so a ton of fab work to make it fit, plus I'm sure it is going to be too wide to fit in a 65 Dart. Wheels & Tires, and front bucket seats are probably the only other parts you could use. So, sounds like you should sell the Magnum and buy parts that you can actually use.

In a nutshell, if the price is right, RAID AWAY!

Isn't there a guy on here or maybe the b body and in mopar mag that even crossed over the interior to a classic so you can take the dash and seats and cross them over might need some cutting. But the nag 1 is a decent trans personally would bolt a 727 to it for better reliability but that's just me.

Well you could also part the reset of the car out to recoup even more money. Even if you use a 727 or 833 behind it, more parts to sell.
Sometimes the problem with parting a car out is the space it takes and all the parts eat up a lot of space.

I think just go for it! its time to start parting the newer rides to improve the old ones.
then 30 years from now it will be "I found this nice SRT Mangnum but someone pulled the original drive train" lol!

This is along the lines of my thinking...

i am up in air right now. i am finding it hard to tear apart a perfect car. tincup makes a solid point. sounds like the engine is all i may be after. i would love to use the nag trans but i may be making my life tougher by doing just that. i will test the waters. i have a local guy looking to sell one of his magnums to pick mine up. i will keep searching for a used engine. i guess i will stay on point take any money from the magnum sale and get my front end. thanks for the all the advise.

Figure out what type of resto mod you want to build and just get those parts only to build it. By parting out your Magnum, you create TWO projects. You'll be forever dismantling the Magnum for parts to use and parts to sell. All the time you spend taking it apart and selling off the parts is time you can spend on the Dart. Plus the issue of space, it isn't worth it. An SRT Magnum is very desireable. Sell it for the most you can and then get going on the Dart...

yeah, I had an ebay link for one in Utah, cant find it now
the bid was only at 105 but the buy it now was well over 30K
would have been pretty funny

the fraud was a sarcastic attempt at humor, nothing to be taken serious

Again... Another statement I agree with.

****, I'd be tempted!

Can you rent a Magnum with a 6.1 these days?

you could always put your Dart drive train into the Magnum...:)...along with the seats and rear end....a un-resto mod.

What CudaSRT said.

Assuming you use the engine and trans out of the Magnum, and perhaps the front seats, the question becomes how much is the shell worth. Unless your willing to sit on a tore apart car for at least a year, I doubt there's 5K there. Could be wrong, but I'd sharpen my pencil before I went that route.

Why is the NAG1 hard to make work? I recently bought a 6.1 and a parts lot for the engine, and I thought the trans would be an easy sell. I guess not.

The NAG trans uses info from the ABS module to calculate output speed. It needs info from the CAN bus system to work. You have to have the whole network. Very finicky set up to transplant unless you have programing level equal to the manufacturer.

I looked at a magnum here in MN and they are tough to find....definetly sell it complete. Got any pics and a price?

i am going to sell it. i can not find it in myself to take a perfect car apart. here is a picture. nothing special. 137000 on the dash. kkb says it is only worth 9800. go figure....

KBB doesn't matter, I would ask more and you will probably get it, if you still have the original wheels lol. One thing to keep in mind is how much money do you think you would need to at least equal the Magnum in comfort, ride, braking, top speed, room and cool factor?
