Any experience and wisdome would be appreciated:

01 Dakota 4x4 with tape/cd infinity stereo.

So, I am looking into a bluetooth head unit and possibly dumping the entire infinity stereo system in my 01 dakota.

I have an audio input device (standard headphone jack input) that plays the Iphone or mp3 player thru my fm antenna line (auto disconnects FM antenna while music going thru) and the quality is about decent.

Generally I want more modern hands free phone action and better audio quality from my phone to my head unit.

I have been online several times and cant find decent info about options for putting a sony or pioneer in this type of car.

It appears the factory infinity system has an amp in the kick panel and the speakers are 2 ohm.

It seems the best option is to remove the factory stereo, install a good one and remove the factory amp, run the new head unit to new 4 ohm speakers.

Anyone have experience with modifying these infinity amplified stereos?

Thanks much.

yup just replace the head unit im a fan of alpines and all the speakers i run new wire fir the speakers and if you want loud install a 4 channel amp

I had a problem with my Infinity system in '01 Ram when I upgraded. Apparently I was still going through my factory amp and when I cranked up the music it would shut itself down and then reset. I ended up gutting the whole system out and put in a 500/5 JL Audio amp, speakers and a center console sub-woofer.

So, if I install a regular stereo which is for 4 ohms and run thru the factory infinity system, will it work well or stress out the head unit or fry my factory amp?

Oh. Ok thanks J-miller..

This process appears to be a pain in the nuts (wallet).

Thanks.

Update: I put in a sony bluetooth head unit and it is very much better in clarity and power. I am still running thru the infinity amp and 2 ohm infinity speakers but it is really a vast improvement over the factory head unit. I enjoy cranking it up now.

I think that dual media 3 band EQ "joystick" fader Infinity is quite possibly the best factory head unit installed in any vehicle up to the modern "synch" style units.

That said, the one in my 2000 Dakota started loosing the FM tuner last year.

I bought an open box Pioneer 4400 series from a friend, and I LOVE it.

No bluetooth, but it has USB and aux with adjustable input levels.

I liked it so much I bought another one just like it for my 73 Satellite, and I'll likely buy another for the wife's car- so I can have the same interface.

My rear speakers in the Dakota are bypassed and upgraded Pyle 6x9.
The fronts are still through the amp. I just keep the fader adjusted so the fronts don't overdrive.

There's a "secret" cheap wire harness kit (available from ebay) that matches the harness plug at the amp, so you don't have to splice if you don't want to.
The part number is on FxBO somewhere.

The only thing I don't like about it (or really any modern "soft" interface) is navigating five layers through the menu to adjust the EQ, and then doing it again for the next song. I think I'm going to get one or two (F and R) old school passive EQ units to resolve that.

My Satellite has 10" woofers and component tweeters. The 25-ish WPC is not really enough for them so that car will get about a 100 WPC amp.

Sorry my head unit is a pioneer X6500bt. Just info.
