New borgeson fast ratio steering box

-
I just did this on a 69 Dart. It had Schumachers to start, then bought TTIs and attempted the new box install. Not a chance. We made custom headers for this application.

Just to confirm, GMachine. You have a small block and the TTI step headers did not fit with the new style Borgenson box?
Thanks!

Does anybody know what the "base box" is of these? Surely these people are converting a factory GM box off "something." ??

Delphi 600, Jeep Cherokee

Thanks, year range? Anyone tried to "build" their own, IE mod the K member or fab their own brackets?

What does the aftermarket do to make these work? Are they shortening / resplining the shaft?

Pretty sure it has a new longer output shaft. Im thinking they are 94-02 Grand Cherokee boxes?

I recently put in a Borgeson Steering box, Universal Joint and Hoses (the whole show). Flushed the old stuff out of the existing pump (which is new by the way). The box, hoses and U joint fit great, work great (My alignment is .5 degrees negative with 3.1 degrees of positive caster on either side, did it at work today). Now the car has 235 60-15 tires, car is a 1976 valiant, quite low, with original police wheels. welded K-frame, boxed lower arms, Edelbrock shocks, subframe connecters reversed spring hangers, .910 Torsion bars, moog offset bushings, etc. handling is great have done the big car tie rods and brake upgrades so it stops great too. The only hang up is with this new box or my pump makes a stupid whining noise when you are going straight or don't have a load on the box, as soon as you turn the wheels, even at a stand still, or when driving, no more noise. Gone no issue. Now back to straight driving or sitting at a stop light, dumb noise. used new PS fluid from parts store "A", but Im wondering if maybe if fluid makes a huge difference in these boxes? I bled it as directed and even went back and forth 40 times with wheels on turntables to avoid flat spotting and harsh treatment of the box. Called Borgeson, they said they never heard of a problem like that, and if it doesn't go away, call back. Granted car has 50 miles of driving since I installed it. I hate this whine, its not loud, but its there, and unlike other whines it goes away under load. I researched the flow control valve but I don't think theres any correlation . Who knows maybe somethings still tight. Chime in if you've had the same issue or a idea. I may flush the current PS fluid out and get some mopar PS fluid for the jeep application tomorrow. have a nice day - Brian

Thank you, All good to know. I have been planning to do this in the future on a 68 Valiant small block. For now I switched to a manual steering box as the PS box leaked pretty bad.Gotta save up for the switch over with a new pump and hoses looks like about a grand.

I thought that too, but the noise is so low that once you start driving, put the AC on (yes this car has AC and its so much nicer and colder than the new cars) and have the radio on you barely notice it. The old box (reman junk) didn't have it, but it wouldn't return from a right hand turn. I bet the box is just got to break in. Im a tech by trade and have seen some boxes do strange things, once they get some mileage under their belts they seem to be ok. it seems like as soon as you move the shaft the slightest amount from center and the spool valve opens to direct fluid, no more noise. Its a slight inconvenience which I will put up with if need be. Ive already lowered the pressure with the flow control valve from the slant 6 p/s pump. Honestly guys Ive driven new Challengers and this box feels way better than a rack. This is def for guys who want a track car feel. If your just a cruiser, I would get your core to a reputable rebuilder. If your not racing around and understand it was what it was, the old box was a comfy set up. I wanted something so my version of the green brick (pics to surface soon) would show Mr Yuppie what Mr angry thinks of 3 and 5 series. its no Viper ACR, but even with 15 inch rubber you are surprised. next step is 18 inch rubber in the 255 size at all 4 corners. I like the cop wheels, car looks hard as hell, but those 18 inch monsters in Black look sinister. Good times.

I have same issue with my new borgeson box.
Makes light whine noise going straight.

I have redline ps fluid in it.
After about 1000miles sound is only there when i turn slowly to right and take my hand off steering wheel.

I really hope that noise will go completely away.

That noise is news to me. I can't I've heard that from any of my customers or experienced that in the shop. Normally a while comes from an aerated system. I am now using power steering fluid from Lubeguard. Having used Redline, this is supposed to be significantly better.

Most of the late model Mopars use ATF+4 in place of Power Steering Fluid. I was told this helps pump noise, especially when cold. Something to consider?

My Duster was originally a power steering car but we switched to manual when we found out our original CPPA Headers didn't fit with Power Steering on the Big Block. Now that I have the Schumacher Tri-Y headers, I'm definitely wanting to put power steering back on the car. With the smaller size, the Borgenson unit looks like the ultimate solution. I will be swapping the rod out of the column to get the shorter (correct) length to back to power steering. It seems everyone switches from power to manual but I have had a hard time finding info on converting from manual to power. I believe I'll have to source all the brackets and pulley for a Saginaw Pump set up to fit on the 440 with these headers. I have yet to see anyone with the 440/Schumacher headers/Borgenson combination in an A Body yet, or at least with pictures.

I am starting to think that. It my old stock federal PS pump that makes noise.
Anyway noise is so quiet now that I can hear it only when car idles or I am coasting.

But after drivin all summer, this box is way good. Steering feels like new car.
