I've had my 74 custom for a little over a year. When we put new tires on it, the front right tire was worn worse than the the front left tire. The car pulls to the right when the brakes are pushed. We took the tire off of the left, and pushed the brakes while it was running. The caliper does work. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this to happen? Thank you all in advance!

Check your left front caliper, it might be sticking. If not the caliper it could be contaminated pads or mis-matched pads. If the brakes check out ok it's probably worn out suspension bushings, ball joints or tie rod ends.

Other things to check: tire pressures, misalignment, and as noted, worn suspension parts. In particular, a bad strut rod bushing can cause toe-out under braking, making it pull to one side.

Actually, toe will not make one pull. If the strut rod bushings are bad when brakes are applied, it will change the caster angle and that is what will make it pull. The strut rod bushings would be high on my list of suspects.

Sounds dumb, but check the rear brakes. If the left isn't applying equally to the right, or the right isn't releasing as fast, it'll do that. Had that prollem wit chebby drums twice.

An old collapsing brake hose will cause pulling also

Ye' numbahaw Whon job is to get yourself a service manual. That is a MUST. AND you can get them FREE. There is no 74 available "free" but there is a 73, which is very very close

From your description, it "might be likely" that worn or even damaged /broken front end parts are the cause of this. Disc brakes (duh) are VERY reliable, BUT there are some things, and after reading through the "manual" you can check some of it yourself

If the brake system is old, has not been rebuilt, etc, one or both calipers might be gummed up, rusted, STICKING

If the rotors are excessively worn, especially unevenly worn due to things like muddy roads, ....

Ditto on the pads.

Could be a hose problem

For all we know, someone hit something and damaged the front end.

Thank you all! I did recently buy an original service manual on ebay! I love it! The car only has 85,000 miles on it, so it could be possible that the calipers are original?! I'll switch them out, the rotors are in good shape, and there's plenty of pad left. I looked at the brake lines, but didn't see a crimp. I haven't checked the struts, though! I really enjoy my old car, and want to try to fix it up the way it deserves. I appreciate all of your help!

I really hate to hijack this thread, but I am having this same issue, except my car pulls left. Most of what everyone has suggested I've changed. Completely new front end, QA1 adjustable strut rods, new brake lines, new calipers, aligned, Dr Diff master cyl, aftermarket prop valve, etc. After replacing a few things like calipers on the front end, it still pulls left. I also took out all the pressure to the rear line as I could. I was thinking I was having issues with one cylinder not applying as much pressure as the other. But then again, I'm running a spool so how much can the rear wheels, with uneven braking, cause it to pull to one side since they are locked together? I'm a little lost at this point.

If you start a new thread, that would work a lot better. I will be glad to jump in, but not here.
