The take apart and put it back together can be totally avoided on a factory distributor.

Weld and grind, install tower, use a degree wheel and tape a zip tie to tower to see how far the rotor will twist. Remove tower and adjust as necessary. Double the number you observe to get crank degrees. Fairly simple hillbilly solution. I've used JB wled on the advance slots before.

Using the plate doesn't appear to cure the take apart and put together based upon Demon408's experience. Stuff happens! I do think the plate is a good idea.
