Because many members find out about this site from google searches.

Joey likes to have high member count to help keep the advertisers and the google traffic....

The money helps keep the site up and running in addition to the gold members. You don't have to go gold, but you have the free choice to do so. However, still making it available for free to those who choose not to go gold or can't afford it at the time. Nobody's excluded...
