Hey everyone. I have a 1970 dodge dart custom, slant 6, 225, auto. I am in need of some help today. I can get pictures of the part I am talking about in a little bit if needed. There is this black "thing/ball" above the dimmer switch. It sticks out of the floor and I cant find where it goes. Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Ha ha ha. Not laughing at you. Undoubtedly, it is the foot operated washer pump

Yep, put some fluid in your washer reservoir and give it a few pumps. If it's all hooked up it should shoot some on the windscreen. :D

Seriously? I have never heard of a foot operated washer pump. Of course I will go look, but where do the lines run then for the pump?

From the pump up to the reservoir. Then you have lines from the reservoir to the squirters.

And yes, seriously, that's what it is.

Well 67Dart273 and Bad Sport, thank you for your help. I tried looking all over the internet and couldn't find what that was. I love this website. You guys are the best!!!!

Well, LOL it's what becomes of being "old." First one of these I ever saw was when I became concious of the world, perhaps 4 or 5 (So about 1953). We had about a 50--51 Ford which had one. Back then most? all? of em were aftermarket, not factory, and had GLASS!!!! jugs. They also had a snap in bracket which held a smaller 1 pint or so GLASS!!! bottle with concentrate detergent

This one here is "fancy" it is vacuum pump operated, still glass, LOL

Wait, just wait, until you discover your first oil bath air filter LOL

Yup. My first car, a 57 BelAir, oil-bath, road-draft, slush-box,no-swaybar-land-yacht, Chic-magnet, with the huge steering wheel, and the mandatory spinner, and room for two in the boot.

Yup, my buddy had to explain what that "squishy button type" thing was just the other day. We looked but I don't think my car as any of the washer system left other then the button of course.

There's not that much more to it - the line to a foot pump reservoir (different from the electric pump one) and lines up to the squirters (that's a technical term) and that's it.

Some of the Europeans including Vee dubs used "spare tire pressure" to operate the washer. Must be nice, having a clean wind"screen" and flat spare, LMAO

We had one or two of those VW's
Remember the vacuum windshield wipers that quit working right when you needed them most? (usually Ford Pickup Bronco or Jeep)

One of the VW's we had the turn signal was a cable operated metal arm with reflectors on it that swung up out of the body.

Here's one.

Factory German option, if I remember correctly..? Always liked these...

I'm old enough to remember when trucks had those signal arms. My Dad had at least one (Model AA dump truck) that had one. You pulled a chain / string inside to run it up. You ran it as far up as it'd go for "right" straight out for "left" and "sorta out" for stop, slow, danger. I doubt, LMAO that they were used all that much. Hell people don't signal TODAY

found on the www

Our old truck. This was taken long about 52--53. On the left is my Gramps who was about 53 then, much younger than I am today. Dad on the far right, both of them gone. So is my little sister, gone with brain cancer in her early 50's. The reason I look so DARN unhappy is I just got a 'pankin. Look at the headlights. I had broken one of them out with my toy hammer trying to figure out how they work!!!!

The thing had no key, you twisted two wires together to run it. Most of the floorboards were gone, and it scared me to death, thinking I was gonna fall through. The few times we drove it after dark, you could see sparks and so on from the leaky exhaust. These had wooden floorboards. No heater.

My Demon has a functioning foot pump, washer setup.. I love it, one less electrically thing to go wrong or short out..

Ran across this thread looking for something else but while I'm here....my Duster has one of these and I've been looking for a replacement, are there any parts or reman units available?

I have a foot pump if interested.

I drove a 1970 Porsche 914 1.7 liter for ten years that had the wiper washer hooked up to the spare tire. I forget how it worked, but the system kept air in the spare by shutting down the squirt system at a pre-determined air pressure. The Germans were not that stupid.

O K you guys are showing you AGE!!!!!

back in the day..... your ARM was your turn signal, no seatbelts, yes vac wipers, and NOONE made child seats.... how the heck did I or even my kids survive and reach adulthood!?

and they gave me a shotgun for my 12 th birthday!????? ha

you want old - what's this!? (I know us old guys know - so shhhhh) O:)
