I am swapping the 318 in my 87 D150 to a 360.I have Hedman coated long tube headers for it and am debating whether to run a 3" single exhaust or a dual 2.5 exhaust.I have mufflers and pipe for both applications.I am leaning towards the 3" single for a factory look.
My questions are would the 3" single lose appreciable power(engine is mild 360 that I hope makes 350hp) vs. the dual setup?

If I go with the single is it worthwhile to do an H or X pipe before they merge into one pipe?

The motor is an 84 reman longblock that will have some light headwork, cam(at this point something similar to a comp xe262 or the like),performer intake and a 4 barrel in the 650-750 range as I have several extras. The block will be decked and the heads shaved to get me as close to 9.00-1 as possible. This is what I have to work with.

It has the stock gearing which is unknown at this point but will likely end up in the 3.23/3.55 range with a sure grip added.

Not a hot rod or heavy project just want a dependable truck that can get out of its own way if needed.I bought it for a $1000 with a 318 with a cracked block.

If it were me, I'd go dual exhaust with the x-pipe. Just my opinion. I don't see negligible gains by going x-pipe into a single exhaust. Not my expertise, I'm sure someone with more knowledge on this will chime in:)

With a teen there will be no loss or gain either way I would think. I do know that my 88 D350 came factory with 2''dual exhaust,no cats(over 8500 GVW) that feed into a single 3'' tail pipe after dual mufflers. It was a 360 4 bbl factory. Now it has a 318 4bbl. I was thinking on the same lines as you that when it needs the exhaust replaced I will go single 3'' for ease and weight reduction. Lots of pipe under there that run side by side on the passenger side of the frame. Just a thought.

A dual exhaust on a truck can be a pain to do. You would think it easy though.
If you decide on a dual exhaust, do a smaller pipe size. A 2-1/4 dual exhaust would be fine for your power level. A single 3 inch would be fine though.

Id go the single 3" with a good muffler. A lot easier since the fuel tank is in the way and you'd have to run both pipes to passenger side anyways.

No gain running a crossover into single. The "Y" pipe IS the crossover, LOL I didn't realize trucks were such a pain. Lots of room under there LOL

Run single exhaust, the gas tank requires you to run the exhaust down the passenger side, PIA for duels.

I just had a fresh single exhaust bent up on my 78 power wagon just because of the real estate the truck requires for duels.
