I replaced an old worn grommet to stop a mild gas leak a few months ago. Today while filling up at the gas station, it started dumping onto the ground once it neared the top. I looked underneath to see the brand new grommet had split in half!

So now while I wait a week for a new one to come in the mail, I'd like to figure out how it split completely apart. Faulty product? Could I have done something wrong installing it?

It's very odd.
I wouldn't think there is enough stress on it to cause any thing like that to happen.
It's just a snug fit on the tube
Even old age doesn't seem to make them fail.

$25 from jegs last time. Found one on ebay for $9 located in that state up north, so I should hopefully get it this week.

I'm having issues with my new grommet too. Filled the tank and it was spewing gas from the grommet. I may need a new one.

Did you have issues getting the filler tube into the grommet? I had a had time getting into my new grommet. Maybe it got damaged then? Or maybe it was a crappy grommet.

Anyway... I was wondering where you got your new grommet and how it worked out for you?

Where did you buy your grommets? What brand are they?

Maybe there's some bad ones out there we need to know about...

probably CRAP chineese stuff, but, I always sand down the outside of filler neck to make sure it is smooth and the neck will slid into it without a big struggle. also lube the neck and inside of grommet with something like liquid spray silicone or baby oil / .

I bought it at Classic Industries right over the counter, and I think the brand was OER.

On the website, they have two listed.

MF296 - 1964-74 Mopar Fuel Tank To Filler Neck Grommet

MF297 - 1970-75 Mopar Fuel Tank To Filler Neck Grommet

I purchased the MF296 grommet for my '74 Duster. Factory fuel tank.

Don't get any ideas, but I did lube it with petroleum jelly. LOL I didn't do any sanding though. I didn't even think of that. The new rubber grommet was kinda hard, just like the 40 year old rubber grommet that I replaced. I thought it would be softer.

Looks like a lack of installation lube and the resistance tore it to me.

Gotta lube the fill tube and inside of the grommet. I used some wheel bearing grease.

Ok, then I guess I should pull the tube out and inspect it to see if it tore. I'll put that on my task list.

Today I hope to pull the steering column out. I want to paint it black and also re-key the ignition cylinder. It's always something.

By the way, here's some pictures. I wonder if this is what the OP's grommet looked like when it was leaking.

That wet area on the lip of the gas tank is fuel. You can see the shine around the filler tube where it "seals" against the grommet, I think that's gas too.

I had a brand spankin new one that came with new tank fail on my valiant with no visual signs of damage. I live close to whitepunkonnitro and he gave me one off of a parts car, and that solved it. funny how a 40+ year old reused seal worked better than a brand new one.

Several years ago(many), I installed a brand new tank on my 80 Volare. It came with a new grommet. I could tell right off it was a bad fit and a wrong compound. It went straight into the trashcan. I reused that 1980 grommet, and it still works to this day,as it did, some 35 years ago. You can tell the junk by it's lack of lead-in chamfer,it's hardness/softness, and it's fitment.

The cheap one I bought on ebay has worked just fine. Designed differently than the jegs model. I installed it the same way, greasin it up with some oil. Still took a little force but slid in much easier than the first. I think the other one was the wrong size (too small inner diameter) and busted when I shoved the big tube into the rubber.

Hahahaha....yep, happens to me too!!

After I tackle the interior, going to pull the grommet off and see what happened.

Going through the same crap can't get the tank with the grommet to slide into the filler neck. I bought the same part from classic industries and it does seem a bit smaller in diameter compared to the original. Too bad the original one tore in half when I pulled it off or else I would of just used that one . It seemed to slide in way easier. I'll try again tomorrow this time with some lube for easy slip in hopefully lol

Good luck! I haven't messed with mine yet. I think I might order another grommet else where and try my luck that way. Let me know how it goes!

The silicon lube they sell for pulling wire thru conduit is great for this....

When you get your replacement, make sure your tank straps are tight. I could see some fore aft movement on the tank causing premature failure.

I just replaced one that was split down the seam with one from Fillernecksupply.com and it was a perfect fit. Cleaned the neck area up and lubed with vasoline. No more fuel smell in my garage!
