Tunnel ram street carbs

-
Last time I messed with Carter carbs was the AFBs on my stage 2 max wedge. The edelbrocks, they have mechanical secondaries?!?

The secondaries operate with the throttle using linkage coupled with a flapper air door to limit air until wide open to prevent bog and are not vacuum actuated. well, in a way I guess it is but the secondary butterflies are mechanical

Hey 73AbodEE

One think I've always wanted to do was a T-ram,on my 360. And the one thing that always kept nagging at me was the non progressive linkage.
How do you find that, in stop-and-go traffic?
Do you find it at all difficult to control a steady speed at low throttle openings?
Is there a learning curve as to throttle control?
Any sage advice?

Now on the other hand, I've got a 4 speed car and tried 1 to 1 and found it to touchy for the street. I think it was the feathering the clutch with way to touchy throttle ?

Yeah I forgot to mention that mines a stick too.But with the 11/1 starter gear, and the current tune, it pulls itself off the line without much help.Still, I worry. And much like the OP, its the cool factor. My AG/Holley works just fine. Thanks for the tip

oh it's all about the cool factor, and it is! The progressive is kind of cool in the sense that when that second carburetor kicks in it's kind of like a turbo effect. on the street with street tires it kicks in at about 3 grand and that's when the sweet spot of the cam kind of kicks in and all hell breaks loose and especially the tires! :burnout: :coffee2:

See some guys get it.lol it looks like the 650 Eddy carbs are going to be the choice. Will buy the correct tuning kits and get it dialed in.

I ran 2 750 Double Pumpers on my 440 and it liked it. I would vote 2 650 Double Pumpers on yours.

That Sounds an awful lot like a hybrid AVS/AFB. Does it have boosters in the secondary?

yep , boosters, I should mention the flapper door is controlled by the amount of air being sucked onto the secondaries.

jpar,
where did you source your progressive linkage kit?

summit sell both kinds , the progressive is a little more complicated to set up , but im sure you could do it easy. I just prefer to run them together, so far so good.

The Motor made good power with the single 750 and dual plane, i cant see it being any worse with the tunnel ram. I like the AVS carbs due to the vac secondary opening, and the drivabillity. If this was a race car i would go with the holley 660 carbs. Lots to consider when putting a T ram on

jpar,
where did you source your progressive linkage kit?

oh I made it myself mostly, it was from a Mr gasket kit off the shelf at the local parts store. I'll go out to the garage and take a quick picture and add explanation of what I did, the picture tells a lot. I have a Carter AFB that I believe is a 625 CFM and a 1406 Edelbrock on the front(600cfm) kind of the same carburetors. not only are the Edelbrock easy to tune, but they fit correctly without having any sideways linkage like a Holley s would. fuel/air mixture distribute evenly from either carb or from both. I can rev it just as quick and crisp from either carb or both. I bought a wide band o2 sensor to help ajust the carburetors and its running between 11.5 to 12 which is a little rich but the plugs look good.

my hand is only in the picture too block the late afternoon Sun and making a bad reflection against the camera. but with that said a cheap linkage kit from the parts store is really all you need with Edelbrock or Carter carburetors. ( pretty much the same thing). as you can see I have the rear carburetor set up in quite the normal fashion the front carburetor is where the magic happens - lol. I have the slide through pull tab set up lower- i.e. closer to the fulcrum point of the front carburetor than the back carburetor. thus allowing the front carburetor to have a quicker swing and catch up to the back carburetor at full throttle. the little set knob with the set screw on it is simply set when both carburetors are at wide open throttle. Easy no?View attachment 20150605_174157.jpg

Yeah, I can see a BBM having more idle air requirements than my little LA, meaning it would work non progressive.Whereas,on mine, I wonder if it wouldnt be too jumpy at low throttle settings, Kinda like an off-on switch.
I have a couple of old AFBs. Just sitting on the shelf, collecting dust...................Hmmmmm............Im about half-way there then!

Wataminit!
I have several old small-primary TQs sitting here too! Maybe the 360 would like those non-progressive, Double hmmmmm. I wonder if those would fit on a TM? Maybe this winter......Naw, probably not.

HAHAHA Spoke to Holley today and they recommend 2 of their 390 cfm carbs. lmao Will go speak to my engine builder this weekend, he has been gone for 3 weeks.
