Hello, is the underhood clearance the same for early A body, compared to late? Thanks MT:burnout:

Might send a P.M ,to Toolmanmike/66 340 Sedan/ or MeMike. These are all avid early a body guys, one of them would surely know.

No answer yet. Im trying to find out if I can put a stock intake from a 69 340 on my 318 in a 66 Dart. Stock 273 cleaner. Looks like it might not fit. Talking ONLY about clearance issue! To hood. AFB Carter carb, original from 273. MT

This is really old school but I take a straight edge(broom, mop handle) and after mocking up the intake, carb and air cleaner, lay it across the fenders and see if it touches. If barely you may have as much as 3/4 inch when the hood closes.Less if the brace crosses above the air cleaner. That is if you have the other intake off.Just a thought..

Thanks. Engine still together. I need to get 340 manifold blasted, and painted for use and I wanted to make sure it would fit before I spent more money on it. I really wanted to make this swap a one day thing. Putting 714/302 heads and this 340 duel plane Mopar Intake. And going back to a solid camshaft and lifters. Thanks again.:burnout:MT

Don't know if this helps but, 65 Dart running a Edelbrock air-gap with Quick fuel carb. Using a 14" drop base air filter and everything fits, it's tight but it fits.

To test hood clearance, after the hood will close, I make a paper "straw" on air cleaner stud and do different lengths till I figure out exactly how much room do I have. Was able to added a 1/2 inch heat spacer, but not the 1 inch version. A tape straw works also.

Good idea!

Modeling clay formed in to a cone and placed in various spots on top of the air cleaner assembly. Make sure the air cleaner stud is removed. Slowly close the hood down to the latching point. Open it back up and check/measure the crush of the cones. I did this on my '65 Valiant and figured a Performer RPM intake/Edelbrock carb combo would fit with a 3" drop base air filter using a 3/8 inch heat isolator. Engine is a 318 on stock mounts.

All good info guys Thanks! I will let you know if what I have fits! hope so. MT

SOOOO... I got it mocked up today, No way it fits. Bummer. If you used a drop style cleaner prob would fit, but with 273 unsilenced air cleaner, even with the shortest filter, not fitting. There goes 150 bucks! Im going to try to sell.:burnout: MT

More info. If I put shortest air cleaner, and no gaskets, it will squeeze under there, but it rubs the hood. Holley fit good tho. MT

You might also look at a "plenum" (or whatever it is called), which is a 90 deg elbow which bolts to the carb inlet. MeMike has one on his early slant engine. They come in purty chrome, some w/ 2 ducts. Also used on production engines (ex. Magnum), but usually to a throttle body, so different diameter, though there are carb adapter plates.

I cut mine hood NEVER CLEAR THE MY AIR CLEANER
