4 Spd slight grinding when shifting.

:finga::wack:
Oil cant fix a maniacal problem. I'm an AMSOIL dealer and if I could honestly sit here and say put AMSOIL in it and it would fix it I would. But I'm not here to make make blanket statements just to try and push a product. It sounds like (from the skimming I did) there is a real internal problem with his trans that oil isnt going to fix.

I'm pretty sure this issue of caused by my mechanic not putting it together properly.

I tightened the cover months ago, but not to the order as stated above, so I just put the trans in today and took to for a quick drive. still has a slight grind between shifts. I will look at the side cover bolts, make sure the correct one is in hole # 1 then adjust as the steps above mentioned, then take it for a quick drive.

If this doesn't fix it, I will change the oil. it has ATF in it right now.

I have another 4 spd in a different car that works. I really don't want to have to pull it and swap them. Guess we will wait and see.

I have to second the fluid can make all the difference comment.
ATF may be too thin to stop the gears from spinning before they try to engage.
When it gets hot it gets thinner, which goes along with worse when warm, so syncromesh fluid could very well fix the problem.

The attitude I'll stay out of, because as a general rule we don't talk to each other like that over an opinion offered. :)

once you put in the syncromesh - it will be a little till you see the difference but from you describe " slight grinds and stubborn gear changes " it will fix the problem...

this stuff has worked miracles for me in the past.

Been there done that got the t-shirt when it comes to trying different fluids. But you must have been there when the trans was built and know it inside and out. Glad you could help.

I'm going to try and adjust the cover today. What fluid brand and name should I use?

Also make sure to keep the linkages properly adjusted. Ive had to adjust my 3rd and 4th linkage once or twice when i would get a slight grind going from 4th to 3rd. Adjusted the linkages and what a difference even little adjustments make.
Im also running 75w90 lucas full syn gear oil in my 833

Last night I had my wife press the clutch and i was able to spin the clutch disc freely. when she released the clutch I couldn't. so it seams to be working fine.

I was unable to work on the side cover bolts alignment today. I may try this evening...if not this evening, tomorrow looks like I will have a more available time to tinker.

Figure I will buy some fluid tomorrow morning and do a change on it anyways. What brand should I get and how many L? Im guessing 2L or 3L

pennzoil syncromesh - ITS A YELLOW CONE LOOKING BOTTLE..

both my cars took two im not sure about yours... maybe three. not sure.

i think royal purple sells syncromesh too but i cant speak for that on eim sure its more expensive too.

ive used pennzoil and thats the one that has worked for me.

well, I tried to adjust the side cover. there sure isn't much movement for it to move up. but I think i have it shifting as best I can while testing from under the car.

I drained the oil and filled with sincere mesh. noticed that the olds ATF oil had some brass metallic flakes floating through it. Probably not a good sign.

Going to have lunch, then take it for a quick test drive to see if it helped. will keep you posted.

The synchro rings are made from brass.... wear on them is a likely source, and sure would cause the inter-shift grinding....

BTW, did you ever tighten up the clutch fork release rod a bit to make the clutch release a little further? Might as well try that as the gear oil if you make no further progress.

clutch is releasing a lot. its internal issue for sure. Im going to swap out another trans , then rebuild

OK, while in there, check the disc for any warpage or the hub being being out of alignment, just to be sure. At least manuals are easier to work on.....IMO!

put a few more miles on it with the new oil.
wouldnt hurt since you made up your mind to swap it any how.

maybe your title shouldnt have been "slight grind" haha sounds worse than originally stated, my grind was pretty bad and there was also some metal flakes ...

yeah check you oil pressure and check that release fork. like ^^^^^^^^ he said. . . make sure you burp out air if you have hydraulic.

you got a internal issue, swap trannys and fix the grinding one correctly. small parts kits and gaskets are cheap. one missing roller would cause your symptoms while side cover is off fish around in case bottom with a magnet you might be surprised what it comes up with lol.

I'm in the middle of doing a teams swap.

Pulled the trams from my donor car. I think I will rebuild the bad one over the winter.
