Just noticed my heater is dripping slightly on floor mat today. Now my question. Can I by pass the heater core by connecting the 2 hoses at the firewall in engine compartment? This would only be for a while until I can get the core repaired or replaced. Maybe permanent since it is never driven in cold weather. Would this cause any over heating issues by eliminating?? This is on a 66 Dodge dart 273 engine.

Opinions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

You don't need to connect the core, connect the two going to the engine, or is that what you meant?

What I would do is get some scrap hose, attach, let the outlet down "safe" and rig something to blow gently in the other fitting, then change your drain hose to the opposite fitting and repeat. You can extract most of the coolant out of it so it won't drain anymore. Also, flush with water and drain, so any remaining drips will be simply "water"

Every summer I disconnect the heater core and install a plug in the intake and plug the nipple at the water pump cause even with the heat all the way down some heat still comes through. Going on 8 yrs. now and never had an issue
