I would like to be able to fit 15x8 drag radials in my rear wheel well of 71 Scamp. The 1/2" lip on the inside of the wheel well that the chrome trim would screwed to is in the way. I dont have the chrome trim on my car, so this lip is not needed, but wondering about the strength if I remove that lip. My axle is centered under the car and I have a equal amount of space on both sides.

What would you guys do? Cut it off, leave it, or do something else? If you choose do something else please give me your ideas. Thanks
 
With the correct back space wheel you might fit it! What is the tire width you want.

If it a slant or 318 car do as you please.
 
Well I have a set of 15x8's already mounted on some rims, with stock back spacing. It doesnt appear that I have much room to move the tire towards the spring.

When I had them mounted on the rear to see how they fit. The lip (the one I want to cut) was just contacting the tire.
 
My opinion is to roll the lip.I makes it much cleaner and no sharp edges.
 
I am not a numbers guru so i would say it is your car and if you want to cut .... DO IT!

otherwise the other option is roll it. I plan to roll mine on a 67 dart. If i offend someone and they don't like it. Then they can buy my car for 6 digits and do as they please. Otherwise shut the hell up.
 
I like the idea of rolling that lip up instead.. Much smoother and more finished look IMO. Thanks for the tip on that.
 
I had a similar problem, where the wheel and tire did fit, but on sharp turns the body roll would make the tire sidewall and lip touch.

I rolled the lip with a baseball bat, closet rod, and a jack. It worked fine, and I heated the paint - no cracks or anything. You can't really tell I did it unless you look inside the wheel well.

If you do to a track like NHRA, they won't allow a sharp edge on tour quarters unless it's factory.
Plus, it's a lot stronger to boot.........

anyone ever roll the rear fender lips and take a porta power and swell them outward? I did that on my 67 hemi car. if you ever see one that the rear fenders are swelled out about 2" , you`ll know where it came from. was told it was just sold about 1 1/2 months ago.

not to mention made of real steal instead of a recycled bud light can , my front fenders are rolled but they were done by a pro who shaped a piece of 1/8 flat stock and welded it in along the radius to reinforce the fender , I'm surprised you can't fit a 15 x 8 in back there I had to space mine out 5/16 to get a little more spring clearance for the Nitto 275/60/15s but I have plenty of clearance to the lip still .
 
As an addendum to my last post. In my real world opinion there is no need to tub or move springs in any more unless done for looks. We are using M/T radials with Cal/Traks in factory location and we are in the 10's in street trim. the days of cutting up cars for big tires are over unless you want to. My .02 cents
 
I have a 68 dart with stock 15x8 rallys and 275/60/15 I moved the leaf springs in 3 in. and rolled the wheel wells just a little and it looks great nothing rubs
 
I've checked out a few videos of rolling them. Im going to try the baseball bat trick on mine.

Years ago my boss trimmed the inside edge back a little and swelled the fender opening out a little on his 67 427 Fairlane. When done there was just enough room to clear the slicks, and at the races no one ever noticed or said anything. He still kept winning 'best of show' awards.
 
I trimmed mine off with a cut off wheel. The outer and inner fenders are seam welded at the very outside edge where it turn under the car, so if you go to close you risk separating them. I got a little to close in one section but it hasn't caused any problems.

I like the rolling tool, but I wonder how well it will work on a fender well that isn't round like the one in the picture?

I have a Eastwood roller and it will not work on the Darts and Scamps. Since they don't have the typical wheel opening arches and the wheel tucks. With the suspension dropped my Eastwood roller was still too long to attached to the axle and roll the fenders. That's why I chose the cut of wheel method.

Ramie... MANY years ago one of my buddies had a '65 Chevy II that he drag raced and had the same issue. Well, me and my other buddy both worked in a body shop and all 3 of us liked drinking beer and experimenting, so we took our porta-power jacks and some blocks of wood carefully placed in the wheel wells for support and we managed to gain a good solid inch of additional clearance by pushing the whole wheel opening area outwards. There was very minimal damage and it actually looked really cool. Wish I had some pictures. LOL
