I try and bite my tounge the best I can when listening to know nothing idiot's.
As far as people asking the question, I tell'em the truth about the cid.
The comment of "But it's a dog motor - Why did you build a dog motor" is easily answered with, cost of a 340, I like the extra torque the extra stroke gives me on the street, I'm not racing, it's only considered a dog motor because of the years it was produced and parts it was given in the roll it played, people mover, not performance or race engine. But that has nothing to do with anything when you totally rebuild it for performance or race since very thing gets altered. The fact that it WAS a dog engine is no longer in play and has zero bearing on what it is now or will be designed for no matter what it started out as.

And I leave it at that. Only the truly stupid argue from there that it was a dog motor. I just smile. You can't fix stupid, close minded stuck in a rut thinking people. They will just develop an excuse as to why your dog motor just mopped the floor with them. And or try to add in that you spent TONS of money to make it better than a 340.

Considering that the 340 is how old now.... Are there really many left in great shape as to just slap on parts and a cam to go racing and survive? Your money, your gamble, see ha at my shop when you break stuff.

I remember an article in one of the mopar rags years back, where Tom Hoover was being quizzed about the 360. he basically stated, it would have ended up being a better performance engine than the 340, but the death of the musclecar and smog regs killed off the engineering that had just begun.
I must ask, isn't there probably just as good (or better) engineering for the 360 NOW than what would have been developed back then, if Mr. Hoover had the chance.
lets face it, our Mopar camp is divided between " all original" and " build a better and maybe cheaper mousetrap" and maybe, make it look original????

Remember the 360 was not developed in the smog era. It came out in 1971 in C- body cars. Those cars were heavy. That explains why the 360 has all that torque. Think about it... more torque, longer stroke at a lower rpm. That's what eveyone is looking for today and all through the 90's. 408 stroker 416 stroker? How about a early stroker in a A-body the 360! Great engine. The 340 is legendary because it was a super hot motor the was placed in some legendary muscle cars.

"does it got a 350 in it"? "Yep, with 400 horse".... lol. No matter what classic car it is. I think it's the only motor size they know........

Depends on who builds it. The old man wanted to build a 340 for his Duster ages ago. Couldn't find one and couldn't afford the ones he did find.

In comes the 360. Cheap, easy to find. That car became a legend in the area. Once word got around it had a 360 in it, all of sudden, those same folks who were saying the 340 was all the rage were coming to Pop for advice on how to build a 360.

When you get right down to it, though, it's like a buddy of mine, seriously into Mopars, who claims the 360 is "junk." It's not junk, it just came out in the "junk" era of smogged cars.

Funny how everyone rags on the 360 for not being the 340 then thinks the Lil Red is one of the most awesome vehicles ever built and then goes on to make the claim of how fast it was compared to the competition. Kind of contradictory, don't ya think?
I'm not talking about built I'm talking about stock .
The question was why people ask is it a 340 .
340's were mopars best stock factory small block .
I have both motors .
My 360 has about 100 more hp then my 340 they are not stock .

My comment was for sales of why people are impressed by 340's !
A 340 is a 340 with a lot of history and a reputation as a high winding stock muscle car motor that embarrassed plenty of big blocks in its day in stock form !!!!

Barbee;

I remember such a write up. And I think he was right. I always wanted (just for chits and giggles) to build a 360 exactly like the 340 and dyno it. Same cam, compression, X heads, etc....

TG360;

That's correct! '71 was the first year for the 360 though it didn't get a 4bbl. Or any other performance parts until '74 when it was to late. Damn shame huh?

Jimmer;

Everybody wants the legend and when they see the car for sale at a 360 price, they get upset. Always the case of wanting everything for nothing.

Seems that the chevy guy's love a stroked 350 to 383 in their cars, so there attitude changed when I told them that a 360 is a factory stroker 340, all it needed was more compression. But as previously mentioned, rebadge it as a 340 or like mine a 273 and no stupid questions.

The '360'

Regarded as a low-performance Torque-job.

Until 'Miss Mighty Mopar' {Judy Lilly} literally crushed the SS/MA record in
1974 with her 'new' 1974 Duster 360.

Judy was putting up > 11.45's @ 117 MPH in 1974.

Then, everybody wanted a 360.

Well, my uncle had a factory 67 Cuda, but his had the 440 hemi, too bad he totaled it in 68. I wanted that car, true story .

I love to tell the guys that think they know muscle cars that I have a '70 360 Wedge at the shop. The look of amazement amuses me to no end.

Got half a mind to put my 360 Wedge into my '64 Dart and tell everybody it's a 273, (instead of the 371ci it really is!).

the issue is not which one is better...the 340 was a legend,
the 360 was a lo power people mover.
can a 360 be built to perform...sure.

69, I know your gonna have a match race between the 67 cuda 440 hemi and 67 454 mustang, can't wait !

Funny, I get the exact opposite and I actually had a 340. People only seemed to want to know if I had a 318. I'd just chuckle and say no, it's a 340. They'd look at me like "Really? Come on, no way!" This happened several times, I have no explanation for it.

Funny too, that combo had a rowdy solid cam, Victor intake, double pumper carb. and idled at 1,100 rpm. Not sure what could have made people think it was a 318.

People just say stuff, they usually have no idea what comes out of their mouths.

I have a 360 in the dart. The girlfriend is constantly asking why everyone wants to know if its a 340. "360 is bigger than a 340 right?" sais the girlfriend.

Lets hear some good comebacks. or am I the only one that hears it?
318 340 or 360 , all good if built right . There are 318 out there that will walk all over a stock 340 , it's all in the build

In August 1974 Car Craft wrote that they tested a stock 360 duster that ran 14.60 in the quarter and that was with 3.21 gears. Imagine what she would have ran with 390's like the 340's had in the early 70's- The 360 was just as powerful as the 340

I don't know, but what I do know is peaple remember the 340 muscle cars. There were no 360's in muscle cars, and for me the muscle car era ended in 1971, but that's just me!!

My duster has the '71 340 stripes and callout on the hood so people assume its a 340..no,its a 360 my 340 is hurt right now,,either one kicks the snot out of most big blocks though:D:D

Right 3.23's and 3.91's. EL5 The Duster in 74 with the HP 360 is as much a muscle car as a Demon 340- Better Carb-Better Suspension- Better Ignition- More Cubes-Better Brakes-Safer Car ect.

It's because the kid that ran the projector at the movie theater could go down and buy a Barracuda with a 340 and whip up on most of the hot cars around town And not even know how to change his own oil. The reputation quickly spread. The 360 came around at the beginning of the smog dog period and the 360s weren't all that impressive off the lot. It took a little massaging from a motorhead to have a strong 360.
