Thinking about removing the Classic A/C system from the Dart. I dont drive it when its hot, and would rather have the access to the engine. Its a 68 ac car, I'm not really worried about hurting the value, after all its not a 340 Cuda. Anyone remove their AC setup? I see people convert to manual steering from time to time so I dont imagine this is unheard of. Since it has rarely been used in the 4000 miles its been on the car, I am leaning toward removal and selling it. Anyone do this without regrets?

I do. if it looks worth saving I do, so if I sell the car and the next wants the ac, he has the parts.

i'm like you, its in my way!!! if I want ac, I sit in the house!! just me.

If you do decide to chunk it I would love a spare control head.

i don't have pics of the final product because the car is in storage now but I actually cut out the firewall and welded in a section from a non / a/c firewall.

the problem with selling a/c stuff is that its very heavy and hard to ship.

I had an a/c set up from a parts car and I couldn't give it away so it ended up in the scrap pile.

unless you have someone local who wants it.....most people are inclined to chuck the a/c and save a ton of money and headache in trying to get it working right.

In my case, I chucked it to make way for a big block swap. You should see the size difference between the underdash a/c box compared to the non a/c version. Talk about losing dead weight if your not using the a/c in the first place.

I removed the A/C from my '71 Dart GT. I photo documented everything and boxed it all up in my garage attic. If the next owner want to re-install it he'll have everything.

go ahead and pull it
then box it up and send it to me
among other things I need the lines running to the compressor

DartGTDan has the right idea, if you want to remove it just take pics and document how everything was routed. Then box it up and save it, if you ever want to restore the car or sell it you have it.

Thats it, I'm yankin' it all and donating it!

(fixed it for you)

I looked at the pics you send me and it is definitely different from the set up on my duster
looks like a sanden compressor?

maybe someone here could chime in on the possibilities to mate this to a stock A/C setup?

I removed the AC on my 69 Dart because I didn't want all that stuff covering up so much of the engine after prettying it all up under the hood. And I wanted to be able to show off Leanna's work from Phoenix Specialty Coatings.

If you are going to sell it, then why remove the A/C?

The new owner may like it...

Are you going to change over the hevac ducts also? That is one hell of a job, then there will be open holes in the firewall where the evaporator lines ran....

I would just leave it as is...

I admit back in mid 90's I drug home a 69 charger rt 440 auto with air, I fully well intended to keep it as "my car>" did all the body, engine, changed the firewall to non air, added 4 speed. some people might scream!!!! but it was mine. and affordable charger projects were NOT scarce or that expensive. nor were changing over to 4 speeds! nor were they worth a fortune done.
the good ole days!

I want to ride down the road and hear the engine, and smell fresh air ( as in NO ac!) and not have all that crap in my engine bay.

I'm just the opposite - adding factory air to my wagon so a factory AC firewall is being fitted.

fratzog, that would be a personal choice. some love it and some don't. I removed the a/c from the 73 Dart Sport. but I kept it on the 69 Valiant and I don't have it in the Duster. If you ever decide to sell the car, someone who doesn't care about a/c will buy it. That wouldn't be an item that would keep me from buying one.

Took it all out today with the help of a coworker. Thanks everyone. Roughest part was removing the radiator shroud and fan and pulling the evaporator up and out of the grille. Took us 3 hours to remove and reassemble the front of the bay. I have an engine in there! Next the inside box and hvac controls in one fell swoop. They are outta there!

I am doing the opposite in adding back the A/C to a 72 340 Demon. I have two sets of compressor brackets and all pulleys, still need the alternator bracket

- Does anyone have detailed pics/diagrams of how the brackets go on? I have googled and cannot find any diagrams or info on how to get it to clear the heater hoses. I figured if it came with A/C I may as well put it back on... any help would be appreciated -

The engine brackets would be somewhat different from an original 68 engine. Worse, the "under the dash" stuff is different as well

Nothing in this thread deals with factory "under the hood"

Depends on what part of the country you're from. Northeast? Most remove it. Florida, Texas or Arizona? Definitely want it unless you only cruise in the cooler months.

I've not had a Mopar yet that I found to be more enjoyable sitting in 100 degree heat with sweat running out of my *** crack onto the seat.

I seriously believe guys view non-working AC systems as a personal threat to themselves in some fashion and that's why they remove them. Maybe they think repairing AC systems is voodoo or black magic.

I do like parts cars with complete AC systems because that's the first thing that sells, every time to the guys that are making their cars NICE.

Otherwise when I see a nice car with removed AC I think to myself, "dude, you made this car this nice and then lamed out on the AC?"...or "that would be a nice car if it wasn't so apparent it used to have air conditioning.

Just my .02

Factory service manual contains everything you ever want to know about the air conditioning and every other system. Money well spent.

Actually, it doesn't. "Contain everything." And I'm a guy who is a big believer in them. It doesn't show you the bolt by bolt layout, and certainly not differences, between year to year changes.

I removed it from my son's 67 Barracuda he wanted more of a race car but I saved everything so if he wanted to go back he could. And I'm with 65 DARTMAN I added A/C to my 65 Dart wagon because as I got older my fat butt wants to stay cool
