Hey guys I have installed a McLeod clutch kit in my 68 Cuda, now experiencing severe clutch chatter. I had the flywheel resurfaced before installing new clutch. And have checked the usaual problems. I was wondering if mcleod would inspect the clutch kit if I sent it to them. I have emailed them and waiting for reply. Thanksv

Yes they replied and gave me a couple tips. And if all else I can ship it to them for inspection...

Darren, what tips did they give you?

Common problems like engine tranny mounts, warnout pilot bushing, if you lubed the inputshaft before installing gearbox possible oil or grease made its way to the clutch disc, check for rear engine block oil leaks such as rear main seal. And they really want to see at least 750 miles and 1200 to 1500 clutch cycles. Somthing I do not have yet. I just purchased a inspection camera because I have a sneaky suspicion I have engine oil around the clutch disk. I will keep you informed.

Darren...ok sounds like good info. Should the input shaft be greased? In the past I've put a little bit in the input shaft bushing hole (in the crank). Never knew if it was a good idea or not, but I did it anyway. Just a little dab.

I should be putting my car back together within the next couple of months, so this info is helpful. I don't know if I'm going with McCleod or Centerforce yet. I guess I'll decide when I get the engine back.

Thanks!

I went with the centre force kit and while i was at it i by passed the bushing in the crank and went with the press in the back of the crank torrington bearing to stabilize the imput shaft. It works fantastic. I have about a thousand miles on the clutch and this weekend i let er buck no slippage what so ever and great power shifting.

I am pretty sure I lightly lubed the input shaft splins when I put it back together. And yes from what i have always red you should lightly grease the pilot bushing.

I installed a mclead clutch don't remember which one at the moment but it chattered bad when I first installed it. I installed everything new including new mclead or centerforce flywheel don't remember which but after driving around for awhile like that and making sure everything worked. I took it out on a clear stretch of road and dropped the clutch a few times, problem went away. It worked for me anyway. It's been a couple of years since then still workin.

I have that clutch and have not heard any chatter. "Clutch Chatter" usually comes from non-organic friction materials, such a Kevlar when they are cold. Did you install a new throw out bearing? I've heard these be noisy even new.

Yes i put a new TO bearing. I put aprox 200 miles on the car and it still chatters like hell when letting out the clutch in first gear. Hoping to put at least 500 more miles before winter and if still have the problem I guess I will ripe it apart this winter. I would be very surprised if the chatter went away on its own.

Odd, maybe you just got a bad disc with soft springs or assembled incorrectly.

we have the same problem and got the same answers when we phoned we are at about 300 pushed now, only 900 to go, lol, yes very annoying!

Did you install a new flywheel or have your resurfaced?

Did you wipe the flywheel and pressure plate down with brake clean? I have had a flywheel resurfaced that look good and the damn thing had high spots. Only the inner half of the disc made contact. Chattered bad! Now always put a straightedge across flywheel and check with feeler gauge to make sure no high spots.

I had my flywheel resurfaced and wiped with brake clean.. but maybe it was not resurfaced correct. Another thing that ticks me off is my old cooked clutch and warn flywheel and very dirty. And had zero chatter.

I installed the El cheapo McLeod in my Demon. No issues yet. only a hundred or so miles on it. Went to a local cruise last weekend. Talk about a good time to give the clutch a workout. I have only dumped it once and have done plenty of slamming. Maybe just lucky also. at least I hope. I did lube the input bearing a little and a little WD-40 on the shaft just cause the trans had been sitting for awhile. Goodluck and hope it comes out of it!
