69 valiant charging problem


Cannot tell from your photos. We need a good shot of the rear, showing the brushes..................... I mentioned this above in my earlier post..........

69/ earlier alternator only has ONE insulated field connection. The other brush is permanently grounded

70/ later has what is sometimes called "dual field" which is improper. "Isolated field" is the proper term. They have TWO insulated brush / field terminals. You can use these with a 69 regulator by grounding either brush (field) and hooking the VR wire to the remaining field connector

I think the key to your problem is that you never got the VR properly hooked up. You PROBABLY had the alternator "full output" sometimes called "full field" and were running the car at fairly high voltage.
