I am working on a 68 barracuda 340 S, I need opinions on rust killers, preventives or removers that I can use before painting things such as rear panels or interior metal interior parts. I have been told Ospho is good, I know that some of you has already been down this road and can tell me some good products. Also can anyone tell me if the panels behind the front buckets are carpeted or vinal, mine are missing and I need to replace them. Thank you all for your help.:???:

be warned that Ospho is a phosphoric acid product/ I use it and like it personally, , ( DuPont makes some similar products but are very expensive.) it does good job of neutralizing surface rust. BUT you can have a reaction to it when applying a paint or primer. test a spot first to see how it reacts. Be sure the Ospho is completely dried, needs to be on bare metal, NOT over any paint or primer.
I guess you are talking INTERIOR metal????? most bodymen ( I admit i am NOT one!),,,,do NOT like any type product where they paint. they sand down to bare metal, and use an epoxy type primer.

Evaporust, hands down the best thing I've ever used,go to their site and watch the
video/images. I have used Rustarrestor, and a number of similar milky concoctions
that "convert"the rust, but you had better gotten every tiny speck of scale off or you
can expect a recurrence.Rust Mort is a greenish/clear phosphate based converter
that penetrates well, and has served me well, but it like other converters must be
sealed as soon as they have cured. Evaporust does not need sealed once it has
REMOVED ALL of the rust,it will actually protect the metal untill you are ready to
apply filler, paint, etc.,and I have painted directly over this w/o even wiping the
surface w/thinner or grease remover. It is expensive @$23/gal., but the panel or
part can be handled or exposed even in hi humidity w/o ever flash rusting,no joke!
I posted about this in another thread in the body forum(prob. where this belongs actually),and stressed this products ability to remove rust and protect in the pinch
welds where I have seen the evil orange cancer rear its ugly head again on otherwise
excellent restos.It may require towels,recirulating pumps,and catch pans,to perform
some removal operations, but I'm sure this is the Best thing I've ever used period.
the product will get used up,so I try physical and other cheaper methods to get
most of the rust off 1st,then I finish w/the Evaporust,How often can you say it
does exactly what they say it will, and about something that we have needed for
so long,almost never.

I used the tried and true method. Rented a Joy compressor, bought 800 lbs. of Black Beauty and went at it. Scamp on a rottesserie, did the bottom too. Etching primer over bare metal. High build primer over that, tooled seam sealer. No short cuts, no mickey mouse b.s.. Car isn't perfect but no need to do it again.

I also used Ospho on my car. No issues with primer. For me, it was good to quickly cover bare metal after paint removed since I live in an area with high humidity in the summer. I did sand/scuff it before primer if it sat any time, like 24 hours or more. So far so good with no issues. Knock on wood.

Thank you Killer6 for your help, it is interior metal and I would like something that works. I will look it up on the web, I also was told about por-15 from a guy at the hardware store.

Thank you barbee6043, it looks like i have some reserch to do. I have been told about many products, I've never heard about ospho reactions, but there is still some paint on the parts.
