Hey guys. Just want to know what are your thoughts? I've got a 413 short block from a Winny, only has 45,000 miles on it. Is it worth while building and putting in my 67 Dart? Or should I use it for a boat anchor? How much work is to install the big block in my car? I've done lots of small blocks but have never swapped a big block. Dose the K frame have to be swapped. And will my trans fit?

I have one too. I'm planning to use it but not sure in what yet. If you want to just put it in that's the best way. Pistons are not easy or cheap to get for them so rebuilding doesn't come as easy as a 383/400/440 would be. They are a small bore 440. So cam, heads, intake, etc are all the same and the performance will be comparable.

You definitely want to do the valve reliefs in the bore to help them breathe. Strong running engines and if you do a little research you can find that getting rods with the 0.990 pin will open up piston choices! Some high compression Pontiac pistons could fill the bill..... especially if you make it a stroker or go with longer rods. Check out some of the rods and pistons available. If it runs good as is I'd drop it in with a cam swap of course. Some have the truck-industrial heads on them also which would need to be swapped out for 452 or 906 etc...

Yes, but the 413 will require a tad more money, maybe acouple hundred over say a 440.

Its some work, not too bad.

No you don't have to swap k frames. Schumacher makes conversion kits for 169 bucks.

No, your small block or slant 6 trans wont work, unless its a 4 speed manual, then you can simply swap the bell housings. Otherwise, you'll need a big block 727.

Only a big block trans will fit a big block so get the 727 with it if you can and then have your driveshaft shortened. There a swap kit from Schumacher, (engine-swaps.com) that make it easy.
Next would be to upgrade the cooling, headers/exhaust are not hard to get. Electrical wires can be cut to length. Add or subtract length.

Some good inof guys thanks. I will go ahead wild starting a plane this winter on the engine build and go from there. Thanks.

Wow, just woke up and saw some of my spelling was a little off. Don't worry I'll be all right. Just need more coffee!

be sure it has a long tailshaft 727. it will measure 35"
you are going to need the usual. passenger car oil pan , pick up tube, exhaust , conversion mounts , radiator ...

With what everyone else has said above plus.....
If you are rebuilding, then the 413 can be turned into a 440ish type engine. If not, the 413 starts out with low compression. If your changing the heads, I would use 915's, 519's or one of the ProComps aluminum to boost the compression. I would use a thin head gasket also. Many of the Comp cams packages compliment this build, so cam selections would follow knowing head type (compression), and intake.

K-Frame - I like spool types, they are cheap (low budget) and provide a little more room and strength(not much -and this is my opinion form past experience). Schumacker ( sp) makes great mounts for all K frames- easy to use and reliable. Shumacker also makes a good header for this build. Recommendation would be to grind the weld coming from the head to make a bit better flow.

My 2 cents

If it is in good shape then take it apart and balance it,hone(if needed)new rings(if needed) and bearings, and maybe deck the block and cut some valve reliefs in the pistons. Then look for some closed chamber heads to get a decent street compression ratio.
It could be a low buck build or you can redo it all the way.If you are going to bore it then consider looking for a 440.More cubes is always better.

You may have to ditch your heater blower motor or do the recess conversion on it.

Several posts on other sites say they have bored these to 4.25 with no issues and some out to 4.32.....

Gentlemen, thank you for your advice. I will figure out what to do with this block. At this point and time I have no heads for the build. I will check to see if I can pull it out to 4.25 I like that number. This will all be figured some time this winter. Right now, I just got it back on the road and am having fun running the 360(I've made the last 4 nite Wednesday cruises) Thanks again everyone

The 4.25 bore might be doable, but the later castings should not have as much meat as the earlier 413s. I've never tested one myself so I'm assuming the 413s cast in the mid 70s are cast in the same manner as the other displacements which got more accurate, and better material, but less of it. Have your block sonic tested before you pay for it to be bored and buy pistons.
