There wasn't a bad band in that whole era.Songs that barely made the top 100 back then would be number 1 today.
Paul McCartney has written over 10,000 songs:musical scores, hits, symphonies,
Those bands did it all write,sing,play,arrange,compose.....
from Snipes castle at Waukegan. Illinois, camp MOFITT:
The Whole Lotta Love Album from Led Zeppelon
And the all Beatles stuff..................
Just sayin................
Where I gew up (or tried to) It was just a 4 on the floor and a fifth under the seat.
remember seeing a 340 dart convertible out of the barracks out of the window and thinkin..

Love & have, this album.. The band had enough class/knew enough/, to call it , quits... ( The ironic part: picked up Coda, fell in love with the "Honey Drippers" album,'84... The "Sea of Love " cover is awesome , "Rock 'n by Midnight" is really good rock n' roll....

Do solo songs from the band's members count as to whom speak to you more?

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

I like the WHO better than the stones. Not a huge skynard fan but they can play Simple man at my funeral. One of my favorite songs.

other than the whole 'Pete Townshend can't play guitar' thing.

(as pretty much any list of top guitarists voted by people who know will attest to)

:)

I don't think Frankie said Pete couldn't play guitar, but he is not the best guitar player by anyone's admission! Yea, he does a mean Petey Mill, but not the most accomplished guitarist out there!

For some interesting info, Keith Richards actually plays with only 5 strings on his guitar, and it is tuned like a 5 string banjo, a harkening back to his first insturments! That's why most people who try to emulate his style of playing find it so hard d to follow!

Yes, I'm a professional musician, and am typing this from a gig right now! I play a little guitar, and most other insturments as well, so im a fair judge of guitar playing!!

Yep I disagreed with that as well. Roger Daltrey called Pete Townshend one of the best guitar players in the world in the book "Who I Am". In my mind his playing pales when compared to his creative composing ability-as the writer of most of the Who music. The synth rip on "Wont get fooled again" was not a loop. It was Pete playing every note where he wanted it in the song and dubbing it in where it needed to be.
Not to take anything away from the others-we are fortunate to have lived through the time of some "all world guitarists". One who facinates me is Mark Knofler of Dire Straits. His finger style of playing sounds like two or more guitars coming from one artist.
JMHO-Rat:coffee2:

Sorry, to disagree with you, but, comparing he "prowess" to the ax grinders in the other "super groups" of the time, he languishes at the low end of the list. If you read his biography, he admits it, himself. He was never a strong lead guitarist. He made up for it by playing loud and being a showman. To his credit, admittedly, he pulled it off.

Precisely.
Unfortunately for some people, things only appear to be black and white, On or off. With no middle ground. Townshed wasn't a bad guitarist, he just couldn't, and can't hand with rock's top guitarist.

Richard is an odd ball, and always has been. His playing ability ( song to song) goes from excellent to mediocre. He does great on the R&B stuff, and on the Rock 'n Roll stuff, and kind of falls apart on the on the Rock stuff, unless he reverts back to what he's really good at.

Same here...
I was a professional Musician (made my living) for a number of years. Started playing Cello and Double Bass back in the late 50, and electric bass in the early 60's about the time the Beach Boys were first making the charts. Play some guitar, keyboards, even have a 5 piece set of Ludwigs, and a flute. Also doing a lot of collecting now.

Still playing today as much as possible, but retirement has afforded me the opportunity to do a lot more traveling, so no permanent gigs any more.

I like collecting, but like cars I have to keep my collection in check!! I have 4 acoustic guitars in the closet right now, 3 accordions (yes, I was in a zydeco band), 2 basses, including my trusty standup, a banjo, mandolin, and my flagship 1960 LP is on loan to my niece, another fine player! I gotta quit buying stuff, that's all there is to it! I've had most of these insturments for more than 25 years, some since I was a kid!! Also lost more insturments than I care to admit to unscrupulous thieves, including my "Fretless Wonder", my 72 Strat, and my 66 EB-1 bass!! Also lost my vintage Bassman amp, a Harmony "Rocket", my blond Precision bass, and an old Kalamazoo single pickup electric!! !! Dammit, now I'm mad again!!!

Here's a pic of the fretless wonder and the Kalamazoo at the warehouse where they were stolen! Lost a lot of equipment in that break in, none of it covered by insurance! Shouldn't have had all those open door practices, someone from another warehouse surely was to blame!! Yes, that's me on the K-zoo, and "John Boy" Astle on the LP!

Please allow me to introduce myself.....................................................................
The Who only wish.

How would someone describe the general thrust of The Stones music and lyrics?
How would someone describe the general thrust of The Who’s music and lyrics?
I have my ideas but what are other people’s thoughts?
A one word summary?
Maybe pick one or two songs that you like or think are representative and give a word about them.
It's not about being better or worse.
It's about the each band's image and message.
What were they feeling and selling.
Does the music fit the song's mood?

It's the Pink Floyd, ladies and gentlemen. Animals, Dark side of the Moon, Wish you were here. Three brilliant records in a row. Really there's no discussion.

OK. Fair enough.
But what is the theme of Pink Floyds music?
Can you or anyone put that in your own words please?
If you like them, there must be a reason.
What is it about Floyd’s music which resonates with you?
Just sounds?
Money got the airplay from Dark Side Of The Moon, and it charted at number 13 I read.
But I always preferred Time.

Same question for the Beatles fans?
You liked them. You thought they were better than X,
Why?

Saying A was better than B on the guitar is too easy. It skirts the question.
They were “all” good.

The poll if you will.
The Stones go to looking for brown sugar amongst the honkey tonk women and are exiled on main street,

.
The Who can see for miles and miles and miles and miles and miles and miles.
But Tommy is blind. (And deaf).

For me, The Who's songs speak to me on different levels at different moods.
Who Are You, Baba O' Riley, and You better you bet are some of my favs. Very few
clinkers in their whole collection. I say that and yet I couldn't get into quadraphenia
at all. LOVED Tommy. Early stuff like Can't Explain and Anyway Anyhow Anywhere also
is fun to listen . Obscure stuff like 905 and The Song is Over are really deep feeling
tracks with all kinds of layers of sound hitting.
Anyway, that's my biased opinion. Very underated band.
