Heat Riser Removal??? ... 68-70 340 HP Manifold

Looking for info on removing the heat riser from my right-side 340 HP manifold.

The more I play with it the more I feel like I'm going to break something and the flapper is going to be a permanent resident in the down tube...

There is plenty of advice on buying a replacement heat riser, but I can't find any "how-to-remove" info anywhere.

Any advice is appreciated.

I have done several to my cars and trucks over the years.Not much cold weather driving out here. The best way is to remove the manifold from the block.Cut away the parts from the outer manifold, apply something like PB Blaster to the shaft that is left and see if it will start to move. Apply some heat if necessary.Once removed drill and tap and install short bolts where the shaft was.Or install all new replacement parts.
 
Do you want to remove the heat riser permanently or remove it for repair/ replacement?
 
On my car, I decided to remove the heat riser flap but maintain the counterweight externally for original appearance. You will need to cut the welds on the internal flapper in order to slide the shaft and counterweight out. I simply replaced the shaft and welded it on the inside of the manifold to keep it from spinning.
If you have a replacement kit, it should include a new flap, thermostat spring and bushings for replacement.
 
I just welded my flapper to the open position. The rattling was bugging me.
 
That rattling is very annoying. I figured I'd gain another horsepower or 2 by removing exhaust turbelence caused by the retained flapper :D

I want to remove the heat riser permanently and plug the hole.

If I cut off the little stopper-bar that prevents the counterweight from spinning freely, it appears that I could grab the flapper with channel locks and the counterweight should loosen (using PB or heat) from the shaft, correct?

I had to cut my flapper off of the shaft before I could remove the counterweight and shaft.
