Modifying Auto on the Column Steering Collars - NO Welding Required!!

-
Trying to do this mod on my '73 column. Got the circ clip off the first collar but can't get the first collar to come up off the shaft. Looks like the inner bushing of the bearing is holding it. Is it supposed to just slide off the shaft once the circ clip is off?

Its a tapered shaft and have to use a puller. I made one I can send you to use? This is just a pic I found on here I used to make mine

way back in late 90's I had a 73 or 4 duster slant, 3 on tree, I converted to 318 4 speed/ I did similar conversion to col to get rid of the shifter. if I remember right, I used couple layers of duck tape inside col to give bottom to the hole,,,, then used kitty hair body filler to fill the hole , ground that down and finished with slight layer of reg filler, you could not ell the changed and when I sold it 3 years later still looked like factory.
some times these "incorrect" ways of doing things work JUST fine!!!!!

Thanks for this great "how to"! I'll be doing this to mine in the coming months. Appreciate the info.

I did the same mod on my 67 valiant steering column. One thing I did different was I used the wiring harness from the indicator light to power the indicator for my B&M hammer shifter by lengthening the wires. Now I need to do the same mod on my 68 column but this time I will be doing the ER16 bearing mod to replace the lower bearing and cut the linkage bracket off and shorten up the tube like I did in my buddies 71 duster.

This is a really good how to! Nice job!
