Hey has anybody out there done a "rustoleum" paint job on a car. This is not for my Duster but for my daily driver 1993 plymouth Acclaim. Anything would look better than the original paint that is peeling off. {poor quality paint of the early 1990's}. If rustoleum is not advisable that what would be a good alternative cheap paint. Ive got the shop and compressor. {i remember a kid that used some sort of fleet paint but i cant remember the details}

Check out clhyer. He did his Duster with Rustoleum and it looks fantastic. I have a pretty good eye when it comes to paint and body and it looks great even up close. He got the paint for like 27 buck a gallon at Lowes. lol

The farm stores sell "tractor" type paint. Either that or do some prep and drive it over to Maaco

I really don't recommend rustolem type paint, you have to constantly wax it to keep it from turning chalky white.
Look at summits brand of paint, pretty cheap.

This truck was painted with Ace hardware paint, thinned with mineral spirits.
It was a all year driver, even in the salt, but for a old truck it was good enough.

What ever happened to Earl Schieb???

Ha ha ha!!! When I was at Miramar in the early '70's there was a big "TV noose" story about some complaints their paint jobs didn't last. Earl got on TV, showed one of the shops explained "we can fix the worst of the dents" "spend a short time prepping the car" "Whaddaya want for XX dollars?" I don't remember, 40 bucks for the cheap job?

In the next few weeks there were cars lined up at the shops, waiting to get in!!!

thanks for ideas guys. I like clhyer's paint job on the duster. think i might go with the tractor supply type of paint and use the clear coat too.Im wondering if I should remove all of the old paint {because if it is peeling, im thinking the adhesion is bad on the factory paint job. that doesnt seem like a good surface to paint over}. I wonder how hard it will be to get off.

That doesnt seem like a good surface to paint over}. probably the best to remove as much as you can, just cover bare metal with a coat of some primer or sealer made to stick to metal, though i'm sure the tsc paint probably would stick good too being made for farm use. I wonder how hard it will be to get off. probably not too bad if it's peeling all over, start with some compressed air where it's coming up, wear goggles! Then a razor before going to a sander
:d

Right, Ill paint any car for 39.95! Earl Schieb! :burnout:MT

The problem is what you've got to do to prep it if you ever want a real paint job.. Not worth the effort.

Look at TCPGlobal as well. Good stuff, re-branded PPG Deltron 2000.

Good Ruck!

I did my fiancee's dart with a roller, and a gallon of a Rustoleum color i mixed.

The amount of time wet sanding it and buffing it outweighed the time it would have taken to build a spray booth somewhere and shoot it, but now I can say I've done it. It's out of my system. It also took 4 coats to cover since you have to thin it out a lot with mineral spirits.

I'd likely not do it again, but at about $65.00 eh...

I talked to someone who used to paint cars for $29.95. He said they scratched them up with some brillo pads or scotchbrite or something (I dont remember) and that was plenty good for paint adhesion and then they shot the car.

I've been using krylon rust tough primer on my car

As you can see, the primer didn't set well in the sun, if I had done it later in the day, it would have turned out much better. it looks a lot better than it did though, as it was a 3 color mess.

the foundation, whether bare metal or 50 year old primer you can hardly D A off, is just that.... the foundation, just like a house. and think of this if you ever want to sand off that tractor paint because it is so faded, it is hard to get off. it is durable in that sense.

like the other guy said, check out TCP Global paints. I have been very happy with their acrylic urethane and primers. it isn't THAT expensive to do it right.

Painted this with John Deere paint & primer (it's what the owner wanted). Really didn't turn out too bad for a garage paint job with a small compressor and a HF gun.

I was stationed in Bremerton in 68 . Used to see their adds on TV all the time but they would only show one side of the car.

wow that Camaro looks good, Ben Drinkin. I know there is a hardner you can buy for the tractor paint and a clear coat also. BTW, the car only cost 600 to start with. so the tractor paint is appealing cost wise. Might be good learning tool even if it is just for learning how to do it.
