X head question

Hey guys,
What do you figure a bare pair of X heads are worth? I have an opportunity to get a pair but I don't know what I should pay.
 
Why???

Unless you are building a 68-70 car that came with them, and want a resto, they aren't worth the coin people want.

Buy a set of 70-73 J heads with 1.88's and put 2.02's in them. You'll have a much better piece than a factory X head.
 
X, J, O, U are all identical cept the 2.02 valves in some of them. All worth about 150 bucks as buildable cores......at best. All the X heads have going for them is the fact that they only ever came with 2.02s. Big whoop.
 
I agree, not worth ****, better off getting a set of edelbrocks complete, you will save money in the long run, save time, work and weight, and have a better head.
 
if in decent condition needing only a touch up, 1.88 valve J heads are fine for a mild driver.They will support 400 hp as is in good repair

Exactly..any steel heads i have are collecting dust rusting on the floor..go aluminum you never go back to steel..
 
Who makes a good set of Aluminum Heads for a 340? I heard edelbrock wasn't that great but the guy I heard that from is Crazy so I don't know if I can trust his opinion lol.

Edelbrocks are fine just have someone check them out for you..been running a set for 6 years now great performance...
 
X usually go around $200 bare and around $300 to $400 needing a rebuild. Maybe around $800 to 1k if they have been rebuilt and you can see receipts or talk to the machinist. If you don't need the X get a set of 1.88 J's 915 heads and install the 2.02 this way the valve sits nice and high unlike a lot of original 2.02 heads that are on there 4th valve job!

Maybe I should have asked what a bare set of 2.02 valve stock iron heads is worth :) some guys seem stuck on the "X" factor.

I'd love to get a set of aluminum heads, but the reality is that they would probably cost me around $2000, while the iron heads will be less than half of that. For what I want to do with my car, the extra cost isn't worth the investment.

You are around 2x on the price of the heads.
Bought a fresh set off a member here shipped for $500 bolt on and go.

Maybe in WV, not in the greater Chicagoland area! But sounds like you got a fair deal on a set of X heads.
 
$350 for these. Never used, bowl blend and ported. SS valves. Not for sale, just shown as example to what's out there.

The guy advertised them on this site and shipped them from NJ.
 
I have a set of big valve "O" heads somewhere, as well as several "X" heads, and some small valve Js kicking around.Even a couple of U heads IIRC.
All are low-mileage. All appear to be virgins. Shipping would be "heavy", heehee.

I went aluminum,closed chambers, right from the get-go.
